    Voltage Regulator

    Can I use a 7812CV in place of a 7812AP. The specs on both look a like, but the 7812cv has a metal back and the 7812AP does not.

    You can, but you will need to add an insulation pad if it is heatsinked, or insure it does not touch anything else conductive.

      Yes you can, as as long as the metal tab is not mounted to anything other than Ground since the metal is also the ground pin (same as middle pin). The metal also has lower Thermal resistance than the Plastic body, about 10c/W less than plastic.
