    Copper Coil??

I need help identifying this piece.

It came out of an old seagate external. 9BD862-560.

    It reads .5 ohms.

And it seems to make noise and get hot.

There's no label on the part.

That is an inductor, 0.5 DC Ohms is about right. It may be used as a filter which means it is in series with the load, so if the load is shorted, lots of current will flow through it so it gets hot.

or if it is under rated for the load, i have seen that before in a USB to IDE hard disk housing

He needs to find out if the load is good or not first. Need to see the rest of the board. Is the unit working?

I got it back together now.
It powers up and that's it.
I have removed the HD and plugged it into a computer and it worked.
It's getting the proper voltage from the power supply and to the HD.
Only thing I noticed is when the HD is plugged in, the green light is very dim and blinks every now and then. It's getting .77v. And 2.00v when HD is not plugged up.

This regulator I'm not sure about. I can't find a datasheet on it.
It also feels out, but I'm not sure if that's normal.

            RGV - line 1
            2693 - line 2
            tab = 1.08
(from left to right if tab is facing north)
            1. 0.03
            2. 1.02
            3. 5.02

Readings with HD or without HD plugged up.
