    Gassy Nixie Tubes

Picked up a Heathkit DMM with two Nixie tubes in it. One (seen left) was fine but the other (seen right) has developed a shiny coating in front of the digits which makes it hard to read.

I have seen this before on tubes but it was normally around the getter which is nowhere in the area.

I've seen neons (about the size of the NE-2 type) have a silvery coating.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

The silvery coating in most vacuum tubes is caused from the small bead of mercury that is placed inside during the evacuation and sealing operation. When the heating coil in the tube is energized the mercury will vaporize and burn off or trap any impurities left inside. Where and how the mercury deposits on the glass seams to be random. My guess would be that the film was always there and that the tube is starting to get weak and therefore not showing through as well.

        Assuming this is correct: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getter

The little ring at the top is a flashed getter, and the deposit is normally next to it. (or is at least in all the tubes I've ever seen, then again that's not many) Why yours is on the side doesn't seem to make sense.

However, what I have noticed is that my old torch bulb for my Maglite turned silver (almost black in fact) completely over time. Maybe your problem is something similar, and not the getter at all?

Edit: This sounds like your problem:

Nixie tubes are susceptible to multiple failure modes, including:
        • sputtering of electrode metal onto the glass envelope blocking the cathodes from view

Panasonic Plasma 2008 TH-42PV/PX series - Removing the coating from the Front Glass

I got this set for very cheap, it works perfectly but the catch is that the protective coating was damaged. About 45% of the screen had a green tint, you can see exactly where the layer changed colors to a blueish tone (that actually makes everything green).

"Ok, that's probably just the anti-glare layer" - I thought. So using a microfiber cloth and automotive metal polish I was easily able to turn it into a nice mirror.

Unfortunately, the damage was beyond this layer and everything still had a horrible green tint. I initially...

Conformal coating on Samsung U32D970 monitor PSU, do I need to replace after repair?
            by psyduck
I have a Samsung U32D970 monitor from 2015 I pulled out of the bad hardware pile that turned on and then turned itself back off after a few minutes of use and refused to turn back on. The PSU has part number BN44-00786A, and I found a couple posts about one that had blown with damage to the MOSFETs and PWM controller - but nothing about intermittent failures. I started a new thread and said that I would refresh the solder joints on the board to see if it was just a bad connection and possibly replace the PWM and PFC ICs. I then asked what my next course of action would be after those steps. I...

pile of vacuum tubes... what to toss?
            by eccerr0r
I wonder how many people are in the same boat...

I have a pile of vacuum tubes I've collected over the years. Now the question is: which ones should be disposed of, if you don't have access to a tube tester?

I had swapped a tube into my AR-3 and noticed that sometimes the audio would cut out. Rapidly turning the radio off and on through the control knob "fixes" it, but pulling the plug and replugging rapidly does not.

I randomly swapped in another IF amplifier tube, and it seemed to have "fixed" it, suspecting the tube that I took...

The success story of a Nixie Tube

The success story of Making a Nixie Tube, Let me think we can't keep on repairing the more and more hard to fix items, We need innovation and manufacture products because Maintenance will never get you rich.

The nixie tube is a vintage display device which had been used until 70s when it was replaced with LED displays. The complex knowledge of manufacture of nixie tubes literally died with tube factory's engineers, glassblowers and machine operators.
I discovered nixie tubes in 2011 and since then, I've devoted all my...
