Timer circuit....stop the nagging chime in my car

The government nag required chime goes several minutes if I don't put on the seatbelt. I'm not blasting down the road, just moving it about in/near the parking lot at 2Mph tops.

The circuit is proprietary, so modding it can be a pain. I can add an aftermarket module to override various features, but its $300. One can't override/bypass it at the buckle itself without risking damage to the main control unit.

If I can get to the Vcc of the chime, I imagined I could insert a sort of snooze function inline. I was thinking of using an SCR, with the goal of tapping a hidden button to initiate the timing cycle, which would cut the supply to the chime for greater than the on time of the seat belt alarm.

Since we're in a running car, the design won't need ultra low draw CMOS or anything. I would appreciate any thoughts on this, and thanks in advance.

I can't help with the electronics stuff, but does the insurance company care about this mod? That is, can they pull out a clause to deny payment because of this mod?

    Just food for thought.

Retiredcaps already pointed out one potential liability issue.

Locate the wiring diagram for your car. There is a 90% chance that the signal from the seat belt goes to the on board computer, which controls the chime.

My car only chimes about 3 times, then stops. If I start my car with the seatbelt unfastened, the chime will stop before I have a chance to fasten the belt. Perhaps you need a more user friendly car.

If the chiming sound of the seat belt warning offends your ears, maybe you should get a job driving school bus. After a week of that, the seat belt chime will sound like Edvard Grieg's 'Morning Mood'.

Don't you have something more important to do? World peace, a cure for the common cold, an effective cancer vaccine, or even a BS detector for politicians would seem to be more significant.

        DANGER Will Robinson!

You mess with the wiring without knowing -EXACTLY- what you are doing, you could set off the airbag(s).

$3,000 later, you'll begin to like the chime...

This is why I asked.....all good points, and as to something better to do...well sure, but what's the fun in only doing that? My wife asks me the same question as I toil over various broken monitors, computers, TV's, vintage radios, timepieces and vintage cars. Even funnier is that my day job is surgery and that sort of repair work is done with the engine running.

I do appreciate the input, and as I've had this chime for 59K miles, another 50K or so doesn't sound as bad as a facefull of airbag!

Just desolder the transducer for the chime if it bothers you that much.

You could also put a transistor or solid state relay on the VCC of the transducer to enable or disable it.

As for the airbags that's a separate module and all air bag wiring will be shrouded in yellow tubing. Just pull the negative battery cable and wait 10 mins for the SRS computer capacitor to discharge if you're worried.

Or you could jumper across the switch in the seat belt [perhaps even in the wiring under the seat] and avoid getting into the dash at all.

That was the first thing I looked at. After review of the schematic, there is a feedback loop here with what appears to be an R-C network and not just a simple switch.

The transducer sounds like its at the very soul of the dash....not as bad as a heater core, but close to that pain level. I could do what my Mom used to do and just turn up the radio

Get to the local car junkyard and get a seatbelt hook cut from the belt and stick it into switch.
Or run the seatbelt on the backside of the seat.
                  Whatever works
