Can Micro Controller PIC16C72A be read?

The PIC16C72A is an OTP (One Time Programable) microcontroller. I read somewhere that it cannot be read with a debugger tool such as a PICkit 3 or such. Does anyone know if this is true on this model? I looked at the datasheet but couldn't find any information.

    Anyone know for sure?

you can read it if the protect-bit has not been set

Re: Can Micro Controller PIC16C72A be read?

Hi stj, got a question. I picked up a pickit3 and installed MPLAb X IPE. When I select any one of the OTP PICs such as the PIC16C72, the connect button gets greyed out. If I select something like PIC16F72, the connect button is available. It’s like IPE is not capable of connecting to these controllers or I am missing something. Do you have any ideas?

i think the pickit3 cant handle the old OTP devices.
i'v not done pics in years, but i remember keeping the pickit2 for a reason

Ok so as it turns out, I need to use a PicStart Plus to communicate with this particular one. Apparently none of the PICkit 1/2/3 will do the job. You would think that they would be backward compatible with older PICs but apparently they are not. Thanks for your input and help stj..

the TL866-IIplus lists it as supported.
                so does the T48 / TL866-3g and the T56

Cool, I'll look into those. Thank you

BTW, does TL866-IIplus use it's own software or will MPLaB work?
