    Busted AGP slot.

I have a mobo here with a fast AMD cpu on it. My brother somewhat busted the AGP header. He tried to pull the video card out of it with out releasing the clip. To me it looks like busted/cold solder joints are the problem now. It will pick up the video card if you play around with how its inserted. All the contacts in the header look good and tight. What is the watt, name and size of the soldering iron tip I should use to try and touch up these fine solder joints? I could get around this by using and old regular PCI video card but where would I find one that is big and fast enough to run under windows Xp?

a 1mm spike tip is probably best.

    and .5 or .7mm solder

Dang...I just took that board out in the sun for a good look and I found a burnt off trace in the AGP slot area on the back side. The magic smoke has been let out of it. I did find a Matrox regular PCI video card in my junk pile. I'll try it with that. This is one of those rare times when I wished a mobo did have onboard video...This stupid board is a K7S5A.

Well its up and running with a Matrox Graphics Mystique PCI video card. I'm using it for this post. Its not bad. I think this is my old card I used back in my AMD K6/2 days. As far as the burnt trace goes, my soldering skills are not up to the task. All I can come up with is using a strand or two of thin wire to jump the burnt spot. I may get brave and try it one day.

                Re: Busted AGP slot.

Well I reset the primary display mode to AGP 4X this time and stuck a 64 meg ATI rage card in it and it picked it up right up. Been working fine ever since. I also had to sort out an issue with a bad stick of ram. Replacing the failing stick made things work much better. I was thinking that it was the DVD drive acting up. I changed it out for the new one from my Dell and it still acted up by giving me BSD's. I knew I had a gig of ram in it but it was only showing 512. These were two matched sticks of Kingston. I switched in a gig of crucial and it now shows all the ram and works fine. This four new matching sticks of 512 kingston I have came from a little junked compaq that was given to me to part out. It never saw its ram right and BSD'd alot. Now I know why... This also means a good little PC went to the bin because of one bad stick of ram!

Yes I would like to replace it as the kingstons are now my test sticks because the crucial is in the K7S5A mobo. Then again one stick of kinston 512 DDR can't cost all that much. Because I have the same kinston ram in the dell I just may switch it for the crucial from the K7S5A then use this kinston as test ram. I don't need the K7S5A for anything right now. After I look into a cpu upgrade to make SSE happen with the K7S5A it will leave my hands anyway. Its just may be the "new" PC for my "PC Killer" sister inlaw...LOL I do have some junk "no name" 512 sticks that just may kick it. There is also two sticks of crucial 256 DDR ram around here someplace. This would work if I ever find it...LOL

Here are a few specs from the mobo book just to make sure about this upgrade.
Socket A Processor "other places in the book it says socket 462"
                      Supports AMD Athlon/Duron
                      Supports 200/266 MHz FSB
"I have 1Gig of DDR 266 in it right now"

Processors are automatically configured using firmware and a synchronous Host/DRAM Clock Scheme.

                      The board is a K7S5A v1.0
The book also says: The following processors are currently supported

                      Athlon 650 MHz~1.4 GHz, FSB: 200 MHz, 266 MHz
Duron 550~950 MHz, FSB 200 MHz

I'm just trying to make sure of things here. I don't want to let the magic smoke out of the thing just yet...LOL

I just took the CPU out. Why in the hell do people think it takes a whole tube of heat sink compound to do one cpu! The whole top of the cpu was covered in cheap white compound! I have never found this much heat grease on one cpu in my life. My brother must have gotten this thing as a CPU, mobo bundle because he knows how to use this compound right. Anyway here is what it says on the chip.

                              go there
                              http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K7/TYPE-Athlon%20XP.html

and in the gray box above where all CPUs are listed, select "FSB 266MHz" and either "Core Thoroughbred" or "Core Palomino".

that way the site only lists those CPUs (which are the ones compatible with that board) so you can get the AXDA_____ part numbers to search on ebay (or whereever) for

                              - selecting both Palomino and Thoroughbred gives no results (no CPU with both cores at once :P)
                              - if you click on a cpu link after filtering, and go back in your browser, the filters are reset. -> open links in new windows/tabs

or just let me dig through ebay.com and find the cheapest compatible one so you dont have to search..

the only thing you need to make sure it to have the latest BIOS on it.

This is from my son’s gaming computer that at first had minor overheating issues when playing a very intense game with it causing the computer to crash or reboot

Then bough a new motherboard and a new computer case that a cooling system in it already installed also brought the cooling system for this video card but now the issue with it is that it randomly rebooted screen goes blank randomly and suddenly video freezing or started with video being there then blank screen and then the video comes back or it just stays blank for a while and then maybe it will come back but it...

I had a x1 Carbon Gen 9 come in with a no charge and no USB C power up problem (the machine would turn on with a new battery until it lost charge).
I noticed lifting the protective black membrane near the USB jacks that two little BGA chips were stuck to the adhesive and had fully released from the mother board, one of them looking fully scorched. Q261 and Q263 power MOSFETS.

I found the schematic and diagram for the board here.
