    frying SMT components

    Has anyone fried any SMT components with a hot air gun?

    Meaning, after soldering something to the board, it no longer works?

    How about desoldering?

    When trying to remove some components I've noticed that it takes a while to melt the solder... After that much heat for an extended period of time, I wonder when the breaking point is...

    Perhaps I need to turn up the heat more? What about those SMT components that heatsink to the board? I tried pulling a "SMOOTH" chip off a HDD board, and didn't realize the bottom was soldered for heatsinking...

      I run my hot air at 325C at an airspeed of 5 out of 10. I can solder/desolder much quicker than when i ran at lower temps. Havent roasted anything yet.

          I've used a blowtorch to remove MOSFETs and ceramic caps (among other components) from Xbox 360 boards just as a joke and contrary to my intentions... nothing funny happened - the MOSFETs and ceramic caps worked and were in spec once they cooled. Go figure. I still have them in my parts box.

          I find it that not enough heat is often as bad as applying too much heat. With the former, you often end up breaking pins of pulling pads because the solder is not completely molten. Actually, the only thing you really want to avoid overheating are large BGA chips, because the heat can cause too much internal stress on the die (due to materials expanding and contracting with heat).

              My Sparkle (SPI) PC power supply has broken. Originally, there was totally no power output. The 5V-standby was not there. I have replaced a few bulged capacitors but not helping.

              I was trying to do more troubleshooting but burned more components. Some got burned so badly that the markings were gone. And also, the markings of a few transistors were gone because the component surface was worn out somehow.
              If you happened to have disassembled the same PSU model, please help to provide the markings of some of these components.

              Hi,

              I am working on a Surface Laptop GO 3, which is the new release 2024 with a i5-1230U processor. Originally, it had a 256GB SSD, then the owner attempted to upgrade it to 1TB SSD by himself. "Surprisingly", it did not boot afterwards, then changed back to the original SSD, did not boot either.

              It turned out to be that just a couple of components had been knocked off when the owner was trying to get off the SSD cover with his beloved screw driver.

              I do not have another board of same model. Although I have a Laptop Go 2, the layout of that bit...

              Problem

              This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

              I have a DJI drone that is not displaying a video feed anymore after a repair.

              When tearing down the DJI drone to fix the armature there was some hot glue next to the camera connector that i had to remove.

              Now there are missing components either because they got pulled off or because they where never placed.

              I have two reference images from XXZ and a photo of mine.

              I'm truely hoping someone has another DJI Mini Pro 3 that they can help me identify what these components are and if they are necessary.
