I can't believe there isn't already a YouScope thread!

So here it is.

I've been busy harassing, oops, HELPING my body shop guy to finish the Trabant so haven't really had the time to stop in.

But I did come across this little gem: YouScope. YouScope is an audio file that you can feed into a scope set for X-Y mode. It causes a neat "video" to appear on the screen.

YouScope has been around for a few years now so I'm sure someone else here must have found it.
There's one thing I noticed.... It ties up your computers audio port unless you're clever about playing more than one thing at a time.

I'm not so clever so I tried playing YS on an iPod which gives poor results.
But if one uses Ubuntu to burn the FLAC file direct to an Audio CD and then play it on a Discman.... it works! Audio CDs aren't compressed and have better sound than MP3 players or iPods. The difference can be seen on a scope. Especially if it's playing YouScope.

Compressing the audio file doesn't really work for anything with high-frequency sounds like this.

Color NBTV files are even worse. You can basically just guess what you're looking at if you compress the .wav (or .flac) file to .mp3 or .ogg or any other lossy format and then try to play it back.

If you leave the "decoder" running and set your soundcard recording to "stereomix" you can just about see the video if the youtube video plays back in 720p. The audio compression of youtube (AAC LC 152KBit for 720p) kills the color and a lot of the little bit of details NBTV has.. (see attachment)
