    Antec SP-350 Recap and Fan Mod

    I know this isn't the first Antec SP series PSU recap posted on this site but there doesn't appear to have been one for a while. I did a full recap (except fan controller) and fan Mod of this SP-350.

    Other Modifications:
    Added heatsink to bridge rectifier
    Added 2200ohm resistor in parallel to thermal resistor. this keeps both fans spinning at ~1000-1500 rpm when cold, and they speed up as normal once the thermal resistor heats up and its resistance drops. This alleviates the hot running issues with this PSU.

      Besides the thermal benefits of having some cooling at all times, that minimum fan speed may actually be better for the fan bearings, by keeping the lubrication spread on the bearings. A temp-controlled fan voltage regulator I worked with had a minimum output voltage chosen to have the fan running at all times. We had to adjust that minimum voltage from 6V to 12V. The sample Rotron 24V fan we had ran reliably at 5V (and we set the minimum at 6V), but Rotron only guaranteed 10V or 11V.

          Good point especially since Antec/CWT used sleeve bearing fans in this PSU where good lubrication is very important. This PSU is in my test/experimental system which is not heavily used so I left the stock fans in, if it was in a more heavily used system I would probably replace them with ball bearing fans.

              I sometimes replace the front fan, depending on which brand it originally was. If it's a Dynatron Top Motor, I leave it, but if it's an Xfan, I replace it.
              I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

              No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

                  Looks like the photos in the original post aren't there anymore. :-(

                  I'd like to see if the fan mod was anything fancy...

                      They are still there. The fan mod is simply a 2.2K resistor in parallel with the thermistor. I do this with every smartpower I get my hands on.

                          ASUS P5GC-MX motherboard recap

                          Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
                          This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

                          So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

                          I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

                          This one was actually suggested to me by ChaosLegionnaire....

                          Hi guys,

                          I’m looking for someone in the Northeast to do a full electrolytic capacitor recap on a working Dell Dimension XPS T450 motherboard (it's an Intel 440BX, Slot 1). The board runs mostly fine but is beginning to freeze after warm reboots (turns back on for 30 secs or so and then freezes up but is perfectly fine after 12 hr cool down).

                          I’d be sending just the bare motherboard (CPU, cards, bracket, battery all removed). I’m located in Chadds Ford, PA and happy to ship within the US.

                          Looking for someone experienced with older PC boards who uses...

                          Hi all

                          Hope this is in the correct place.

                          I'm planning on recapping both motherboards. I actually already ordered recplament caps for them, where I will be changing out most for poly's.
                          Could use some double checking to see if I'm not doing something stupid .

                          Got 4 LG L222WS 22" for free - psu recap

                          Got 4 CCFL 16/10 monitors for free.

                          The resolution is almost Full HD (1680x1050)

                          VGA Input only is a bummer though.

                          Uses cheap TN panel with terrible viewing angles.

                          Even though this is not 17" 5:4 screen, still has very low resell value here. Can be found for 15-20 euros.

                          All the 4 monitors were not working and needed psu recap. Used mix of mediocre / junk caps to recap them, then donated 3 of them to friends/relatives and kept 1 for myself. Also like to install extra caps on empty spaces to help them last longer.
