Sharp LC-32AV22U - Powers on, backlit, displays vertical lines, *Mostly* unresponsive

We rescued this TV from our friend who planned to send it to the dump. It seems like it must be something simple, and while my husband is handy with fixing things, nothing seemed the obvious problem (and neither one of us has any experience with LCD issues).

So here's what we've found - plugged in, switched on, the TV sometimes clearly displays "Input 4" or 6 or whatever, more often white lines that are made by the shape of said characters "smeared" vertically across the whole screen like this:

When we first brought it home, after leaving it on a while, it got a reddish-orange "sunset" look across the better part of the screen, but I was unable to get it to do that again today - so I'm guessing maybe it was on TV input and showing some kind of signal? Also, at one point we managed to get some kind of menu up but it was mis-aligned and running off the top of the screen and wrapping around to the bottom - I was unable to figure out how we got there today.

We don't have a remote, and pressing buttons at top generally doesn't do much, but the input button does seem to change things sometimes - I've seen input 4 and 6 today as I was fiddling with the TV. After pressing the input button, sometimes the lines will change and fade or shift colors like below:

At one point, I had the tv on and was videotaping to show what happens when the buttons are pressed (or lack thereof) and I pushed the TV to get a better angle and the "Input #" lines went to crisp clear lettering - does that indicate something that is loose?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give - I sure would love to save this puppy from the landfill (and wouldn't mind having a nice 32" LCD for whatever it costs to fix!)

This is a loose tab-bond on the LCD glass itself.

    It is fixable.

Here is a Sony TV with a different fault, though the root cause is the same.

      Wow! super speedy reply!

Hubby and I are going to disassemble and try to see if this fixes 'er. Thanks for your link!

Be extremely careful when doing this. The glass and tab bonds are easy to break, and any breaks cannot be repaired. Also, avoid getting finger marks under the glass, as they'll look annoying when it's powered up. Good luck! I have done this type of repair three times and succeeded twice.

This video might be of interest too, as it covers a 20" Sharp (using a Sharp LCD panel.)

        and the symptoms sound similar

And a 32" Hitachi (Vestel chassis with Samsung LCD panel):

carefully disasembled and gently pressed the tabs at top and no effect. Nothing changed. Any other ideas?

Can we have a higher resolution picture, try using MANAGE ATTACHMENTS, also, try all of the tabs on both the LCD glass and on the panel board.

Not sure what you mean by manage attachments, but I'll try to find it.

So, when you apply pressure on the bonding at either side (very, very light pressure) nothing changes?

Can you get hold of a hair dryer and heat the bonds up slightly. Make sure to keep the heat low to avoid damage. We are trying to find a temperature sensitive or pressure sensitive component.

Nothing changes at all, not even a flicker. I pressed gently on both the area where it attached to the LCD glass and to the circuit board at top.

In which case, try the hairdryer test. If it is not these, it is probably the T-con. Did you find a clue as to who actually makes the LCD screen itself (in the one I recently fixed it was actually made by Sharp themselves (they have a factory in Japan), but the newer Sharp import Samsung/Chi-Mei panels.)

I'll try the hairdryer - just blow the warm air on the connections I pressed before? Where would I look to see who made the LCD?

Yes, warm air on those connectors.

There is usually a logo on those long panel boards.

                          Chi-Mei has this logo:

Samsung use a stylised "Lead-Free" LF shape.

                          Sharp use "SHARP".

It will be also written on the back of the metal plate.

Other manufacturers are LG Display, Panasonic IPS-Alpha, Chungwha Picture Tubes (mostly extinct) and AUO Display.

Reason is, I only know of Samsung, Chi-Mei and Sharp LCDs having tab bond problems, and severity/frequency in that order. Samsung have them on a lot of older TVs, Chi-Mei with 26" screens and Sharp with some other older models.

The boards say Sharp. Going to try the hairdryer now. I'll let you know if I see any change. Thanks so much for your help!

Nice, I do like Sharp panels. I have a fixed LC-32D44E to watch here now (until I sell it) and it's pretty good for a 720p 32" display. It's unfortunate they do have tab bond issues.

No change with the hair dryer. So if it's not the tabs, you said it's likely the T-Con - where do I find one of those? And how do I know which one to get?

You should put the frame around the LCD back on, then take a picture of the back of the set where the boards are located. The t-con board is mounted to the rear of the LCD panel, where the other boards are. Some Sharp TVs integrate it onto the main board, which is awkward.

                                      Got it back together.

Here's the pic of the board side. Let me know which one and I can take a closer shot if it helps.

Great. Do you see that metal shield at the top of the TV screen? That is the T-con board under it. You'll need to remove the shield to get to it.

Note: Be careful not to touch anything on that orange board whilst the TV is powered, as it could give you a nasty shock. The rest of the TV is safe.
