do you need axial casings or does the board have holes for radials?
the VX is nothing special, just a 105' temp rating....

before you do this, make sure the motherboard VRM can supply enough power for a quad....

so if the pinout is the same then the 61040 would have been better

i picked it because the features closely matched
specially the combination of compact tape AND 8-track.
looking at the internal pictures in the start of that manual they look modular, so your unit probably uses atleast some of the same boards....

linear regulators rarely short out,
they are designed not to do that.
if you see a short between the center pin (earth) and the left pin (input) or the right pin (output) then the ceramic caps are more likely to be the problem....

people salvage them from dumped tv's with broken screens....
