    Concerning USB

I have had inexplicable troubles with USB.
Could this Universal Buse be a little weak on the power side.
My camera, give or take, 250mil, multi card reader, 100mil, wireless pointer,100mil, 802.11 transciever, 150mil.

As you see I'm well over the 500mil limitation of this bus.
I have a hub which I can use unpowered and yes I could drag around another small black brick to get say, four ports and 500 more milliamps of juice.

The situation above is a laptop, but applies to any system as well.
When my USB port is "overloaded" not only do things become unstable but,I may be off base here, I believe my caps get stressed.

    Re: Concerning USB

iirc there is a polyswitch to protect the usb port.
if it trips you must remove the load to let it reset.

      Re: Concerning USB

i was checking an issue on a laptop recently. customer purchased a new unpowered 4 port hub. with optical mouse plugged into the hub, usb flash disk didnt work. using the old 2 port hub both worked. no other devices were plugged in.

what i am saying based on this and also reports i have seen on the net is that usb hubs whether unpowered or powered differ in performance depending on the model. needs some research to find a good one. maybe laptop ports are not so great also for usb power?

i try to limit the number of usb devices though. they do cause issues and more so in win2k than xp. nice to see scsi scanners gone though and their damn adaptec drivers, what a POS that was.

i use usb/ps2 converters on all the mice so that gets rid of one device and eliminates a lot of probs. i read sometime that it loses some functionality though but i never noticed anything......

if you ever need a card reader for desktop some time though, check out the internal teac floppy/reader combo
      http://www.techmati.com/reviews/cardfloppy/index.htm
they are just great and zero issues unlike the sandisk 8in1 which occasionally doesnt work on boot but that might be the mobo.

i like also the lexar usb 2.0 jumpdrive flash disks, they are real fast, can work off them like HDD speed if you liked.

        KC8,
I have never heard of a polyswitch?
Could you go into that a little?

it is a overcurrent protection device that goes high resistance at a specified current.in order to cool down and reset the load must be removed.

Inexplicable voltage readings in LED circuits
                by dicky96
Hi Guys, here is something I see often when working on LEDs in series wit ha 12V or 24V supply. I may see it other times as well but thinking about it, I only recall this in LED circuits.

What basically happens is my meter reads reverse polarity voltages that seemingly can't exist.

Have a look at this video - this is from a new Youtube channel I started a couple weeks ago.

If you like, watch the whole video through, even let me know what you think of it , but if you don't have time just play it from 14min 30sec and you will see exactly what...

failing hard drives after sitting for years...
                by eccerr0r
With the discussion about water pumps failing when cars sit for a while, I wonder what people have seen with hard drives. Do people see hard drives failing after being sat on the shelf for a long time unpowered versus a hard drive that's at least powered up at least once in a while, say, weekly?

Wonder if it's worth spinning up the spare spinners once in a while to keep the bearings lubricated?

Wonder how I should best keep my cold spares for my RAID "fresh" for eventual failures of the working drives. Was thinking about keeping a hot spare but that's another...

                I have an A2251 820-01949 which had a failed TPS62180.
I was fortunate enough to find the video on "Exploding USB-C" https://youtu.be/CAGnMR1aVuE?si=O1oYvAyNMeAr4dv4 what was shared here on the topic.

I was wondering if there are any cross compatible models that have been discovered?
We have an apple ID locked A2179 Mac AIR it's CD3217B2 has different lithography and looks slightly gray but I'm assuming it's the same chip in principal, but I am also aware that for some inexplicable reason mac flashes these chips firmware depending on their location on the board....

Laptop mouse & KB NOT available on power option restart but available only when laptop is cold booted using power button
                by Sanjit Keskar
I have this inexplicable problem from yesterday

Each time i start my laptop by pushing the physical power button in, the laptop keyboard and touchpad are available to me for use when the system has booted to the desktop (I can enter the bios by pressing on F10 too) irrespective of whether the laptop is powered by the AC adapter or the battery. This is normal behaviour

BUT NOW FOR THE ABNORMAL PART

However, when using the laptop normally, if i choose restart from the power options, the touchpad and mouse are non-functional when the system has booted to the...

Siemens Gigaset DA810A landline telephone with answering machine resets every minute
                by Nick Nougat
I'm posting this here since there does not seem to be a more fitting category.

                The Device
The Gigaset DA810A is a landline telephone with an LCD screen, an answering machine and integrated telephone book. I have the version for the European (i.e. German) market.
It has two separate modules that can operate independently of each other: One is the basic telephony part that always works and is powered by the DC voltage coming through the telephone wire. It relies the TEA1110A telephone transmission and dialler chip for that.
The 'smart' part of the phone with the answering...
