    Windows 7 64 bit key

    Two copies of Windows 7 were given to me by my university since I'm a a part of the MSDN student alliance due to being an IT student there...

    Well one copy is a 32 bit and the other is a 64 bit. Both have genuine codes...

    But my brother already took the 32 bit key... I however only have a 64 bit code remaining. I don't want to make the move to a 64 bit OS yet, so I still want to stick to 32 bit because of applications that I need to use for uni etc.

    So will the 64 bit code work with my 32 bit edition Windows 7 disc?

    Also forgot to add... the Windows 7 editions (64 bit and 32 bit) are both the professional series.

      For the retail versions yes the key works for both with those you get a 32 bit and 64 bit CD with one key. That I can confirm because that's the copy I have.

      I went 64 bit because of the memory cap I couldn't stand it.

      If you have an OEM version I'm not sure. Unless designated as such it probably will only work on the respective bit CD the key came with.

      Also remember on OEM versions it locks to the designated computer for life using among other unique identifiers the mobos MAC address.

      A retail version when reactivated on another computer will deactivate on the prior computer. So if you have a mobo die with a retail version you're fine if you have an OEM version tough luck for you says M$.

        you can interchange x86 and 64 bit keys and discs with win 7 OEM. I've done it before and it works
        I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

        No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

          Mine isn't an OEM... the uni gave me retail editions. So ok, I'll give it a try later.

            Right, so Windows 7 works. But I have three problems.

            1. My rear speakers don't work with stereo music anymore... in other words, anything stereo only comes out the two front speakers. So the audio quality is now just shit... and I have an X-Fi!

            2. My Asus onboard wireless doesn't automatically connect no matter how hard I try.

            3. There is an unknown device on my Intel ICHR9 controller and I don't know what it is. Installing Intel chipset drivers didn't help at all.

            I'm getting fed up with this and I wanna go back to XP if I can't fix the issues above.

              Actually I've solved issue 1 by updating the audio driver. So I have the other 2 left...

                  Check the device IDs (via Details -> Hardware IDs) and search for those on the net.

                  as for the wireless: have you tried both the Intel tool and the zero config utility?

                    I solved the unknown device driver through Windows update... it was called the ATK driver... whatever the hell that is... but nevertheless it solved the problem. Ironically Windows update had it under the "optional" section... optional my ass LOL.

                      The wireless that I'm using isn't an Intel one... It's a Realtek one. And I'm currently using the Windows zero config... but still everytime I boot up, I have to double click my network to connect.

                        Drivers are always optional. They were in XP, too.

                                  I bet you have an asus board right? the ATK ACPI driver is used for asus's motherboard monitoring program to communicate with the motherboard, is not required in any way shape or form.

                                  as far as programs go, 32-bit programs run in win7 64. Only a few programs that require 32-bit system-level drivers won't work. Like, I have Nero 7 running fine, but nero image didn't install because it loads a driver for drive emulation

                                  oh and 16-bit dos programs don't work. but professional does have a 'windows xp mode' which actually loads a virtualized version of XP

                                    Yup, it's an Asus board. As stated in my sig, it's the P5K-E Wi-Fi model.
