For windows 7, I agree. 2GB minimum, 3GB or more recommended. I find 1GB enough for XP, though.

as for the power supply remark.. right now taken to heart but too late also.. she has had the PC for a bit now.. about a month.. and guess what.. just went out.. I walked my nephew through a few things and from what he said, it sounds like the power supply blew.. I knew it was cheap, but 1 month.. dang...

in any case, new power supply ordered. I had it sent to their house and am hoping that it fixes it with no other problems.. should be there tomorrow or friday..

As for the RAM, she gave me a little extra cash, told me to get another ROM for it and another stick of RAM. I got the RAM and gave it to my nephew which put it in already for me (I am not going 2 hours one way to put in a stick of RAM!!). He got it in no problem. As for the ROM, well... I am just waiting till i see a good deal on them and find one with good reviews. When just looking at the basic reviews only 75-80% are in the 4-5 star range, I am not looking any farther into that one. Ill give you an update to if the power supply worked or not after it gets put in..

PS .. the power supply is a 450 watt. I have put in a few of these so far an no problems yet with any of them. but for a very basic system, that should be fine.. power supply calculator said that the system used about 300 watts with every thing in before the extra ram stick so 450 should be more then enough.

well, the power supply came in, my nephew got it in.. and bunkus.. I guess some of the fans came on, the lights on the keyboard started flashing in sequence I think, and that is it.. no screen.. no beeps.. nothing else.. I'm thinking that the power supply took out the MB.. and hope that is it.. I'll find out for sure that he got all the wires tight hopefully tomorrow.. but one thing for sure, the power supply is trash and most likely am going to have to RMA the MB.. and hopefully that is it..

Ok.. the good, the bad and the ugly.. first, i was told that they just "barely bumped" the PC and it went out.. I just found out that they are sooooo full of .... uummm... it.. (being nice) I turned around, completely pulled out the motherboard and guess what.. with just the basics hooked up, it started right up.. after examining it, i found that they bashed in the front USB plug ports on the front of the case. Put everything back together and plugged everything back in just the way that it was except the front USB and no problems (that is with the new power supply that is).. I put one of those cheap all in one memory card readers in the floppy slot so they have a front USB on the case. I did test the old power supply with a tester and it loaded up right away, all voltages fine..

one thing that i am not sure about, if anyone can tell me is, there are these black things in there that are soldered on like a regular cap is but it does not look like a regular cap. Does anyone have any idea what it is? or what the difference is? there are a couple of them, I arrowed just one of them.

Per is absolutely correct, those are PI filters.

That looks like a solytech sl-8360 (maybe Apex branded by the casing). I have one as a rosewill 350W, it has a bit more beef on the secondary side, but seriously it's been the most reliable psu I have at my dads house. My Antec TPN550 in my main computer dosen't like it when the power goes out, and laptop adapters die left and right when the power goes out too. That rosewill in that emachines just keeps chugging along.

uranium.. soemthing about that just does not seem right.... Im surprised that it even installed.. but like they say, to each his own..

as for the PI filter, tell me if i am wrong, but from what i have read, A PI filter basically filters the ripple on the line to give a cleaner and more steady power output and also helps remove any noise that may have leaked into the power line (crosstalk) too. Is that correct?

its not a fake pic, google "windows 7 pentium 2". the guy actually got it to run with 96M, but not any less than that

I have a windows 7 lite version that my brother got me to run on this old Dell. Its quick to boot and shut down. The problem is that so much of the OS has been removed that most of the basic things you would expect the OS to do requires and add on program to do it. I loaded the "real" Windows 7 Premium and have had no issues with it other than I don't like it much. After playing around with the system settings I was able to get some of the feel of good old Xp in 7. Now my box is only a P4 2.4 with one gig of ram. I think you need a bit more power than this to handle windows 7. Now that I have two new generators out back I just may reprogram my Xp hard drive today. Junk Parts has one window A/C unit running now! Life is good! I just hope it gets just a little better real soon so I can pay my bills... Its just going to be to hot to screw around in the yard today anyway.
