    Windows 7

    I know we have a windows 7 thread around here someplace. Don't feel like looking for it. Anyway I just got done installing windows 7 Home Premium on my Dell 4550. It works pretty good. Now I just have to get my brother on the phone to tell me where eveything I that I use is hidding at now. It might be in my head but I think the Old Dell is running a bit faster on Win7.

    Make a new folder on your desktop. <Name> = Whatever text you want.

    The intarwebs have nicknamed this 'GodMode'
    Put this into the folder name:

    <Name>.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

    Example:
    GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

          I must have typed it wrong because I didn't get the big list. Can't tell the zero's from the O's

                Thanks! Now it works! I was putting a space in it that didn't belong there. Verry neat trick to say the least. Now I have a way to screw up Windows Seven too...LOL

                  I like Windows 7. FWIW - the search bar at the bottom of the start menu is VERY helpful.

                  Dig up the old W7 thread (I believe it had 'Windoze' in the title) and refer to the link inside for the one update to avoid installing.

                      Re: Windows 7

                      Well this was suppose to be a Dell version of 7. It was downloaded from a bit torrent. On the install it did ask for a windows COA. It shouldn't have since I was putting it on a Dell. I just hit next and it went on with the install. I haven't had any nag screens about activation at all yet. It got a pile of updates from MS too. Right now I have the updates turned off. Its at the one that checks to see if your are bootleg with and altered copy of 7. Since this thing wanted a serial I don't know if its altered or not. I think Win 7 just may make me leave my Xp home alone for ever. Win 7 is faster than Xp even on this dog.

                        My guess is you'll be "deactivated" soon. Right-click on My Computers, go to properties, and look at the bottom of the window. It should give you available days left to activate. Sometimes it takes a second or two to refresh the window.

                            The Dell version will only work on a Dell with a valid Win7 SLIC in the BIOS. You'll likely need to activate soon.

                              When it counts down to 0 days left of your 30 day "activation period" you can run "slmgr.vbs -rearm" in the command prompt with admin priv to get another 30 days, you can do this 3 times at day 0 for a total of 120 days

                                  You need to either get a valid retail license or see if the system has a SLIC v2.1 BIOS already (Which would make you eligible to use the corporate keys for Windows 7)

                                  To check this there is for example the tool "SLIC Dump ToolKit"
                                  A google search will find it, current latest is v3.2

                                        i use to use RW Everything to view ACPI tables to check for 2.1

                                        I recently found a tool called "SLIC_ToolKit_V3.2" by DavidXXW bios.net.cn, i think it might be the same thing Per Hansson is talking about. Very easy and gives you lots o info.

                                        using "slic" on your system is an offline activation method, there are even keys on MS website you could use as long as you pass offline activation.

                                        You can even look for instructions on how to add one of these slics to your computer. (google)
