    ZFS Questions

Who be using this I hate hardware RAID. Every experience I've ever had with it was a disaster. Software RAID has served me well in every flavor I've ever tried. mdadm, MS Storage Spaces, StableBit DrivePool, Intel fakeraid, etc. So, for my "new" VM server at home, running Proxmox, I decided to go for ZFS.

I'm going to be running 6x 120GB SSDs in a RAIDZ1 (basically RAID5), well really 5 drives with one hot spare.

I have a 1TB Crucial MX500 as the system drive. All my VMs are going to be on the ZFS array.

I've done a lot of research but perhaps I'm a dumb dumb or it's because I'm using Bing (hey, free Starbucks gift cards) but I can't find an answer... ZFS can be exported and imported to another system no problem. BUT one has to run the export command first. What if my system drive dies? I can't export the pool if it no boot!

Also, what do I pick as ashift value? The SSDs I'm using for the ZFS array are rather old, they are Kingston SSDnow V300 120GB, which report to linux a block size both logical and physical of 512 bytes. Pretty sure this is a fake reported number and the SSD actually does its own thing. So do I go for 9, 12, or 13?

512 bytes is the legacy sector format. Thus, SSDs most likely have 1024-byte (1 KB) sectors, if not 4 KB.

Drive SMART status not showing up through RAID controller?
      by canadaboy25
      Hey guys,

I have an Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0 motherboard with AMD RAIDXpert. I set up a 1000GB RAID1 array on it. This was about 8 years ago. Every once in a while, a power outage or something would knock one drive offline and degrade the array. After a reboot the drive would be back online and it would rebuild just fine.

Recently, a drive dropped offline and the array became degraded. I figured it was no big deal and rebooted then set it to rebuild overnight. The next morning I took a look and both drives had dropped offline at 70% rebuild. Uh oh.

      I rebooted...

Screw-In Barrel Adapter for LED light array gets really hot?
      by zman78
      Hi All,

I have an LED Light array that had a built-in AC-DC 24v 45 watt power supply. The power supply failed so I desoldered the LED Light array power input wires from the power supply and then screwed it into barrel connector jack (ends still tinned with the original solder).

This is the barrel connect or jack https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Q6YMM6F/

Then I bought an external 24Volt/3Amp power brick (with same size barrel connector output) and plugged it in.

Everything works fine, except that the screw-in barrel connector gets...

Need Help Identifying Parts on a crossover and a few other newbie questions
      by UL161
Hi I am trying to refurbish this crossover with some higher quality poly-caps/parts... The speaker is a in-wall Polk 65-RT... Key questions I have are:

      1) What in the world is the yellow part on the board (label is MET 1.0J 100V)?... Should I even consider replacing it?
      2) The 470uF cap.... Does anyone know have a suggestion as to where I can find a reasonable audio quality polycap near that value? (or at least 3 160s or the like?) { I don't want to spend $70 just to replace this one if I can) (maybe even someone looking at this circuit could even tell if this cap is important...

      newbie questions
      by cloghin
Apologies if I am asking the wrong questions , but not sure how else to start:

I have an A2251 / 820-01949 Mac book pro with no power, 20 v on USBC meter and 0.05 Amps. Following this link ( below)

      * Do I need to remove the board from case so I can access its other side ? The link calls for measuring PP3v3_S5 ( I suppose this is in diode mode with positive probe on ground) , but I don't know how to do that without removing the board from case.
      * I have the FlexBV board , are the values displayed in volts diode mode only ? Because my etekcity multimeter shows...

Samsung UN50TU8000 - Dead Panel Forensic Questions
      by KYBOSH
I came across a 50inch TU8000 that wouldnt start up properly (blinking stand-by light, backlights would cycle on and off).

When i opened it up and removed the power to the mainboard the backlights powered up and everything looked uniform.
When reconnected the mainboard but disconnected the flex cable to the panel i heard the TV startup with the intro sound.

Later I checked for shorts on the panel PCB boards but could not find anything.
When I took a look with the FLIR i noticed the 2 resistors...
