DVD Drive Issues

Quick question

One DVD drive and another DVD-RW I tested good a month ago have
suddenly stopped responding to a drawer open command (via the
open button).

Strangely, they both tested good on a range of media (CD/DVD).
Stranger still, if I open both of the drives with a paperclip and
install media, the drawer will open and close ok! - odd.

Am I missing something here?
Is there an explanation why this is occurring?

This happened to two drives of mine. In both cases, replacing the belt that pulls the drawer open fixed it.

what happens if you send the "eject" command from the pc?

Do these drives happen to be lite-on's? I have this same problem with the lite-on in my computer. Push the button, clicks but dosen't open. Push the button again and it acts like you just closed it and starts reading the disk.

Same thing if you give the command from windows.

ok, found one of my broken samsung drives:

sm-332

dvd rom/cdrw

does not burn discs properly (partially corrupted data). does not boot from a live cd.

is that a firmware thing?


another possibly bad one:
