My buddy Mr.Cline called me from the Gateway Tavern yesterday evening. Its a local Taven/Pub/ shoot the shit place we go now and then. This guy showed up there yesterday with a Pile of Dell, and Hp laptop PC's for sale as Mr. Jim tells me. He wanted from $250 to $350 each for these units. Well Stacy the "Pit Bull Bar Maid" Jewed him down to $200.00 on one of the cheaper Dell units. Hawk Eye who is a regular at that bar was checking it out and found that it had a busted screen. Stacy caught the guy in the parking lot and exchanged that Dell for another one. This thing didn't come with any brick or cord ether. Well hawk was checking this one out too and told Stacey that it felt a little "light."....LOL What the guy had sold her was and empty Dell laptop case. All that is in it is a screen and a keyboard! By this time the guy was long gone. Stacy has been mean to everyone since being employed at the Gateway. Its good to see things come full circle all on their own.

That stinks RD747! Now if I were to sell my Lappy it has a hollow battery in it too, but I would include the guts from this "hollowed out battery case." I gutted it to stop the Lappy charging circuits from trying to charge the trashed battery pack. The CMOS/Backup battery is also shot, but I would replace that with a new charged one. People just need to learn to be honest again."It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."

Re: Empty Laptop Cases Being Sold !!! Beware!
Yes Kc the "White Van Speaker Guy!" The tag line went something like this. We were installing a sound system at whatever house address, and YYY warehouse shipped out way too many pairs of speakes. These things retail for $1,800.00 a pair. I have to clean out, and return this van to my employer ZZZ every night. Tell you what! I'll sell you a pair for$250.00, and if you need two pairs you can have two for $350.00! The units were always some strange brand name thats not sold anyplace on earth except out of the back of a white van...LOL Come to think of it the white van has not been around here for a long time.
I know they were selling trash around here. I took a look at a pair one day and the grills were glued to the front of the things. They were so light that I think a stiff wind would have blown them over.
With that being said, my son bought a pair of speakers out of the back of a white van in Towson, Marryland a few years back. My son was running a job installing all the furniture in a small office building there. There was also a private sound system installer from out of town doing all the lounges in the building ect... He did have too many pairs of speakers on hand, and had to clean out his van only to stuff it with more crap for his next job. My son bought a pair of these miss shipped speaker for $400.00. He came home all happy because he got such a great deal on these "Hi End" speakers. I told him not to be too upset if they don't turn out to be as good as the guy said they were. Allen said noway, they were GREAT because they had been listening to the exact same units in the office build all week long and they rocked. I went out to Allen's truck to see what he had bought and they turned out to be the best Cerwin Vega's made at the time with 15 inch woofers. I had a pair in 12 inch and I busted windows in my house with them! I traded them for four Bose 901's. The Bose had way more definition but could never match the Cerwin's in raw power."It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."

Re: Empty Laptop Cases Being Sold !!! Beware!
Cerwin-Vegas are BEASTS!!My dad used to have a pair. They were amazing.
I've been looking for a pair for myself now that I have a decent receiver. All that shows up around here on CL is no-names and the occasional pair of JBLs. JBL is decent (and would go well with my h/k receiver, fun fact: JBL has been owned by harman/kardon since the 70s) but it's just not a party-bumping, window-rattling, ass-vibrating CLASSIC like Cerwin-Vega!

Re: Empty Laptop Cases Being Sold !!! Beware!
I just googled Cerwin Vega and you can get a pair of the VE12 speakers for about $480.00 plus shipping. Wish I could find me some fool who would trade me some Cerwins for these Polk Monitor 10's I have. I hate them. They may end up in the back of my wagon one day as soon as I put some bypass jacks in the rear for them.
Now I had a pair of Atlec Lansing L100 speakers way back when. These things were built like fine furniture, and weighed a ton. These speakers had the best Mid range, and tweeters over any other units at the same price point. They also sounded much better than some other speakers that cost a great deal more. The reproduction was so natural and detailed. The woofer did tend to have a slightly hard edge in its upper range. This could be tamed with a just little EQ work. These Old JBL's made fine work of most any music. Don't get me wrong, the Cerwin's are fine speakers too. They are power houses to say the least. To sum it up I'd say the Cerwins that I had lacked just a little midrange detail, but in every other sonic area they kicked ass. The Cerwin cabinets were not near as nice as the JBL-L100's, but then again the JBL's cost a good bit more. In woofer department the Cerwin wins for banging out the bone rattling bass, but the detail was where L-100's put a smile on you face. You can buy the Cerwin Vega's today, and they are real good. The Altec Lansing JBL L-100 has been off the market a way long time."It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."

Re: Empty Laptop Cases Being Sold !!! Beware!
I have a full 5 speaker set of the Cerwin Vega E-700 series and they do kick serious ass! My mains are "only" the E-710s but they go plenty loud for me and sound great as well. Vegas have a reputation for only being loud party speakers but the sound is very good. They are not "audiophile" grade but the quality is hard to beat for the money.
Just make sure your amp/receiver is up to the task if you get them. Most low end surround receivers can't get anything close to their rated output with all channels driven.

Re: Empty Laptop Cases Being Sold !!! Beware!
Yes back in my Cerwin days I also used a Harmon Kardon receiver. I do believe mine was stable down to two ohms. The H/K is long gone, and I use an Onkyo something or another with the home theater BS now. The Onkyo sounds just as good as the H/K did. I did like my H/K but the digital controls on the face died three times so I returned it and got the Onkyo. A high current gain design is what you are looking for in amp section that can kick ass. Another good practic is to always set the volume control to its lowest setting before you shut the receiver down. When starting the system up let it play at low volume for awhile so all the caps charge up then you can crank it. If you turn it up so loud that the sound becomes ragged, back off it. You are damaging your speakers at this point. Now if the volume is turned up loud and you power up the system nasty things can happen. Because the caps are not charged yet the amp clips real hard, think square waves. This will blow the fuses in the Cerwins, and very well could damage some expensive drives, and the amp too. I did it onetime only. Check you fuse values and get a few backups. If you find a "Cherry" pair of Altec Lansing JBL L-100 or L-100A speakers remember that they are no good and should be forwarded to me for evaluation....LOL You odds of finding a cherry pair of these are slim and none. What you will find is these boxes with non JBL drivers installed. The last time I checked some new JBL mid and tweet drivers were still around for these. There were some OEM woofer recone/suround kits to be had too. Many people spend a great deal of money restoring these units because they know the sound they will have when they are done. After you put all this work into them I don't think you would want to use them as "Party Blasters." These are the kind of spearkers that make you say, "Whats this? I never heard that instrument in this song with my old speakers." Detail!"It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."
