Phone line plugged into "Internet" port on wireless router

Months ago, I repaired a computer for someone. At her house, I found that the (inexperienced ) customer had plugged the phone line into the "Internet" port (which was actually for connection to an external broadband modem with Ethernet) on a wireless access point (without an inbuilt broadband modem).
Certainly, this setup would not work and fortunately, the router was not damaged by that condition, because Pins 4 and 5 (which were connected to the phone line) were not internally connected in the router.
I remember seeing a 3Com network card with a "No Phone" symbol on it - I think all wireless access points (without a broadband modem) intended for home and business should have a "No Phone" symbol on an Ethernet connector labelled "Internet", "Broadband", "Modem" etc.

My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

People used to do this a lot with laptops that had both modem/ethernet jacks on them.

Apparently pins 4/5 are not connected on RJ45 ethernet. I don't know if there's any dangerous conflict on pins 3/6, which is in use by both.

From what I can tell online, looks like you use the same RJ11 phone connection we use.

Pins 4/5 are used in gigabit ethernet, so it's not safe to assume they are unused on an RJ45 jack.
