CV19 Boredom Build - X5DAL-G Build and a Gazillion Pictures

Rummaging through junk cleaning up around here revealed a X5DAL-G motherboard with a pair of 3.2GHz 533FSB 2mb L3 cache Gallatin CPU's....I've had it a while, why not make some useless rig out of it. I was out of these boards for a long time, I gave them all away.....just to have someone give one to me....

Once upon a time, I used one of these as my main system, back around 2003-ish....maybe 2004....and ran it up until 2009 when I built my first Westmere system.

Anyway, this was a 'tree' freebie....it was definitely not a new one (which they send me many times)...it was absolutely filthy....so it got washed.

    All cleaned up!

Rounding up heatsinks from the junk bin.....not much demand for socket 603/604 stuff these days....I had a few left over.

All cleaned and ready to move forward.

Heatsinks installed + 4gb ECC RAM.

    Testing...

Now for the case..... I have 3 of these cases, freebies from somewhere. One is in use, this is # 2.

    Disassembled & cleaned.

    Test fit:

Ahh yes, a dremel mod was needed!!

    2x case fans....stripped, cleaned, and greased....and a SB Live 5.1

    Saddle up!!

PSU, one of those 500w 'powerman' units.....I have a bunch of these, never had an issue with one....

Not the most attractive case......but it's not like this system is worth anything anyway...

    HDD's....my last pair of 160gb Velociraptors in a RAID-0 on a LSI 9500S.

    All together, tying up cables.

    Done.

No better test than some old Q3A...

It'll browse the web too!! FF24.8.1 seems the happiest on older hardware.

    CPU-Z, which detects the CPU's as Prestonia's, when they're really Gallatins....go figure.

    Specs:

    Motherboard: X5DAL-G
    CPU's: 2x 3.2GHz 533fsb 2mb L3 Gallatin Xeons
    RAM: 4gb Reg/ECC PC3200
GPU: ATI HD 4650 1gb AGP
Audio: Creative Labs SB Live! 5.1
Storage Controller: LSI 9550S SATA RAID w/ BBU
    Drives: 2x 160gb 10,000RPM Velociraptors in a RAID-0 (Stripe array)
Case: Butt-ugly but classy beige A-Open ATX tower

Of course this post created from it....Thanks CV19 for bringing this relic back to life and wasting a day that I'll never get back!!

Wouldn't be surprised if it runs Halo Custom Edition 1.0.10 well, at least on the stock maps and better sound effects, because of a sound card and OS that supports EAX without being emulated.

I don't know why you call those cases butt-ugly, TC. They are anything but that, IMO. Compared to modern all-black cases, I think it really is refreshing to see these old PC cases that actually look like... well, PC cases.

All the modern stuff with fishy RGB LED lights look more like fish aquariums (but no fish and no water... save for when the liquid cooler leaks in some of those silly gamer builds. )

BTW, I ran into the X5DAL you gave me the other day while looking for some parts in the garage. It's still nicely boxed up... which is a shame. Still need to find/make coolers for it... and a case that can deal with all of the heat from two Netburst CPUs. I did recently get two MacronPC cases as candidates, but one has terrible intake vents and the other is missing a side panel. I could also reuse my HP NetServer E800 case, now that its motherboard cannot boot... but knowing that this case was a roach-putter that I treated with Raid (not the PC kind of Raid ) and spray painted with cheap spray to get rid of the rust spots from roach poo - nah, that would be such unfit case for a cool oldschool SM board. So that project is still boiling on the back burner on the back of my mind somewhere.

I think with these particular cases, it's the blue section of the front....just kind of clashes IMO.....but does have a classy look...

Yeah, you're right. It's not as good looking as the all-beige classic cases (or the multi-tone beige cases from the early 90's - those are the best, IMO.) But I notice that blue color was used quite a lot in the early 2000's, right around the WinXP era. For a short while, all-silver cases also became popular in the mid/late XP era. But unfortunately shortly after that started the all-black cases with ridiculous LED designs... and honestly, I think that's where things went downhill with PC case design.
