How would taking on the "major PC stronghold directly" HURT Apple?

Think thats a lot, a similarly equipped mac pro with only a single radeon 4870 and no bluray drive is $15,247.00.

I went to IBM's website and configured a x3500 M2 server with the same dual 2.93 quad's, 32gb ram, quadro fx1800 (about a 9800gtx, so meh,) 8 500gb 2.5" 10,000 rpm hard drives (4 pairs of 2 in raid 0,) redundant power supplies, redundant fans, dvd/cd-rw, Intel PRO 1000 quad port Ethernet adapter, 3 Year on site 24/7 support, and it comes in what I think is a awesome looking case, for $12,867.00

        Base Pro: $2499
Dell with the same specs except BETTER video: $999

There's over double right there. No Celeron, refurbished or other crap. Being able to run OSX is not worth $1500. If you want that level of performance in a Mac that's the price you pay. Ripoff.

My laptop is spec for spec the same as a 1s gen Macbook Pro except:
        +Has a better screen
        +Doesn't overheat
        -Bigger

It was over $1000 less than a Macbook Pro. Plus it's been reliable, can't say that about the Mac. Not exactly double, but $1000 more defiantly puts it into the ripoff category.

I can go through model by model if you like, every single one except for the high end Pro is a rippoff. It's simply not worth hundreds to thousands more just to run OSX.

          Hi weirdlookinguy!

          Simple:
PC is good at building computers for very little profit, hoping to make up for tiny margins by selling massive quantities.

This makes the average price of a PC very low, thus leading to people running around and blasting Mac for being a "Ripoff".

Being specialists in cutting costs to the bone, there are generally more compromises, such as Support. No PC Genius around except for the Geek Squad and plenty of odd accents at the 1-800 line.

To PC's credit, most of the major manufacturers have figured out that the hardware has to be "good enough" to last past the warranty period AND run V(bleep!)sta decently well. This is cutting back the tide of BadCaps or at least delaying it a bit.

Now back to Apple, the MUCH MALIGHNED Low Volume Computer Company that is merely trying to make a decent profit by providing their customers with what they feel is the best computing experience.
A "computing experience" involves more than the hardware itself (and especially the Price of) which is what people around here seem to have a tough time understanding.
This means lots of stuff. R&D, Mac Geniuses, whatever. All of it costs money.
          Who pays for it?
          Apple customers!

Plus Apple has nearly expired as a company recently. Naturally, they want to maintain a decent profit so as to stay in business for awhile.

Now, say they go along with building a mid range tower that is similar to the majority of the PC market.

          Would they sell some?
          Yes.
But probably nowhere near enough to make it worthwhile.
Why? because most people, including most around here are going to make direct comparisons to low-profit loss leader machines from the land of PC.

Why not cut profit to the bone? Well, then you compete against yourself and undercut all the hard work done to insure a decent profit. There goes the Mac stores, the Mac Geniuses, R&D, Innovation, etc.... you end up with "just another PC company with an annoying, hard-to-learn OS" in a cut-throat market. Kinda like a Linux Netbook.

The lesson of Linux Netbooks was not lost on Apple.
Ratdude: would you say Linux is better on a Netbook than XP? That is, is it a superior OS for such a low-powered machine compared to XP or Vista?
          Probably it is.

But Linux Netbook sales totally BOMBED even though they were up to $100 cheaper than an XP one.
If Linux was sold as a $100 extra UPGRADE they probably would have done better!

Apple has worked hard to promote an alternative OS (Non-MS) to the general pubic. Lets not go undermining them and accusing them of fraud for such a noble effort.

          Have Fun,
Get out in the sun and enjoy the weather!
          Keri

PS. No, you needn't bother to work up a price sheet to prove what a "Ripoff" Mac is. You won't convince me of anything but your own stubbornness and I already figured that out.

              High end pro (dual 2.93 quad, radeon 4870, 32gb ram, 4tb hd, 2 cd/dvd-rw)

              $15,247.00

              Newegg build (dual 2.93 quad, dual gtx295, 32gb ram, 1250W psu, 2 dvd/cd-rw, 1 bl-rw, 4tb hd)

              $10,380.75

              IBM x3500 M2 server (dual 2.93 quad, quadro fx1800, 32gb ram, redundant psus+fans, 8 500gb hd's, 1 dvd/cd-rw, 3 year onsite 24/7 service)

              $12,867.00

If anything, the low end macpro's are the best deal. I think this is because mac thinks that the highest end macpro is the best computer on earth. They think its the fastest computer you can get, and no one else makes a comparable computer, so they can overcharge for it.

Keri, do you even know WHY Apple almost went under? This is why:
                - They were overpriced
                - Their hardware was crap
                - Their OS was a joke

                Now today:
                - Still overpriced
                - Hardware is better, but not better then anyone else.
                - OS is better, but quickly falling behind. It's still the slowest OS out there. Backwards compatibility is non existant. Also, virtual machine support is a big thing and Apple is dropping the ball like usual. These things DO matter in an OS no matter what the fanboys say.

If Apple drops the ball on hardware or the OS again then they are dead. Their history says they will.

Now, say they go along with building a mid range tower that is similar to the majority of the PC market.

                Would they sell some?
                Yes.

The old G4 tower shows this argument is bunk. It sold well enough for a Mac and made a good profit. There were reasonably priced (for a Mac) versions.

Apple has worked hard to promote an alternative OS (Non-MS) to the general pubic. Lets not go undermining them and accusing them of fraud for such a noble effort.
Apple doesn't give a rats ass about being an "alternative OS" or saving you from MS. They just want your money like any other company. If Apple could get away selling Windows or Linux boxes for their high profits they would. It would save them money not having to make their own OS.

PS. No, you needn't bother to work up a price sheet to prove what a "Ripoff" Mac is. You won't convince me of anything but your own stubbornness and I already figured that out.
Please explain how $1500 MORE is not a ripoff. $100 more for the case and OSX sure, but for $1500 it's simply not worth the money. Apple's market share in non-graphics businesses is laughable for a reason.

so i wonder how is 15k $ "good deal" if you can get better for 10k and 13k $

Apple Watch Charging Controller Schematics / Boardview - 820-02601
                        by a_p3rson
                        Hi there,

I'm looking for anyone who might have information on Apple's embedded Apple Watch charging daughterboard, ID 820-02601. This is currently used by Anker in their Apple Watch charging products, but likely by other Apple partner brands as well.

You can see the board referenced in ChargerLab's teardown of the Anker Y1811 3-in-1 MagSafe cube - they discuss the "Apple Watch wireless charging circuit" about 2/3rds down the page. It's not pictured, but the board ID reads 820-02601-A, which sure sounds like Apple.
                        This daughterboard uses an interesting...
