    eMachines latest Wonders (Blunders?)

    Hello.

I recently came across a nearly new eMachines EL1200 Small Form Factor system that expired after only 6 months or so.
It was so cheap my neighbor was about to throw it out rather than return it for warranty service.

So I looked it over last night for her.

Symptom: No Power. No response to the power switch.

A quick test of the LiteOn PSU with my KeriProductions PSU tester revealed 5vsb OK and normal operation of PSU outside of the system with all voltages reasonably close and with very little ripple.

A quick test of the power switch found: Open Circuit! No electrical response to the pushing of the button. "∞Ω" for those that like symbols.

Uh oh.... that doesn't look like a commonly available SPST momentary-contact switch to me.
Fortunately, it does disassemble easily. Just pull out the little plunger (squeeze first) and out pops the little contact disc for cleaning. A little DeOxIT and back to life for the little black eMachine. In under 1/2 an hour, too.

OK, so eMachines buys really cruddy power switches.... How does the rest of this cute little box look?

The motherboard proudly states "Made In China" and has an AMD CPU under a decent-looking and very quiet cooler by Asia Vital Components. The big capacitors are Sanyo and Nichicon with some hard to see polymers under the heatsink where the fan blows plenty of air at them through widely-spaced clog-resistant fins. The PSU is by LiteOn, not BestTec.

Could eMachines have seen the light? Even this nondescript little bargain basement box has a PSU with little ripple and decent caps on board!
How do they intend to implement planned obsolescence with LiteOn, Sanyo and Nichicon? Surely not with cruddy power switches.

    Have Fun,
    Keri

I think since gateway bought emachines, they have gotten much better.

A friend's sister bought a new emachines, It has a MSI motherboard, but it has actual UCC polymers on the VRM, and everything else was nichicon or UCC. It had basically the stock cooler from AMD on it, but the fan (a delta 70mm) was pulling air through it instead of blowing air into it.

The power supply is a delta 300w, also. Fairly nice little setup, I thought I was going to have to put a new PSU in it at least.

Acer now owns Gateway and eMachines, and they're better now. At least, the SFF systems are designed by eMachines Japan, and the the latest box(es), EL-1600/1800, are nicely spec'ed for the price.

        I've avoided Acer since 486.

I've avoided Acer since my Travelmate laptop fell to pieces after a few years due to crappy hinges and plastics. Other than that, eMachines doesn't exist here.... well it kinda does to a very small extent because I saw an eMachines laptop only once in a Target brochure last month and that was it.

All that remains of my emachines system is the case but with new internals.
everything else was either set on fire or run over.

Travelmates are now made with magnesium-alloy cases, and are more durable and higher-spec than all the entry-level plastic crap (Dell, Compaq, HP, Lenovo, ...) out there. My guess is the Atom-based eMachines will also be very well made.

                OLD eMachines T6520 BIOS Request!
                by grimacelord
                Hello,

I know that this is probably a long shot, but I figured if anyone could find this BIOS, it would be you guys.

I am working on an (old) eMachines T6520 desktop PC that might have a corrupt BIOS.

                Model:
                eMachines T6520

                Motherboard markings:
                MS-7145B0505068731
                RS480M
                7145 v2.1 RS480-A21+SB400-A23

                Symptoms:
The computer does power on, CPU fan spins, but does not POST. No display.

                Troubleshooting steps so far:
Replaced the CMOS battery (which was in need of replacing)
                Re-seating...

Intel DQ965GF — Need latest BIOS for Core 2 Quad upgrade
                by Artem2009-16
                Hello everyone,

I’m currently working with an Intel DQ965GF motherboard and would like to upgrade the CPU.

However, I can’t find the latest BIOS version or a working download link for it — the official Intel website no longer provides this file.

Could someone please share a copy of the latest BIOS update (preferably the final release version)?

My goal is to upgrade the processor from a Core 2 Duo E6700 to a Core 2 Quad Q6700, so I’d like to make sure the BIOS fully supports...

                Emachines T3104 "Sleeper"/random parts build.
                by dmill89
I decided to see what kind of "sleeper" build I could do on the Emachines T3104 from cheep/free thread with the "random junk" I had laying around (with the exception of a SATA to IDE adaptor I bought to make the original Emachines optical drive to work).

                Before:

                Specs:
                Motherboard: FIC K8M-800M
                CPU: AMD Sempron 3100+
                RAM: 512MB DDR-400 (2x256MB)
                GPU: Integrated VIA Unichrome Pro
                PSU: HiPro HP-P3527F3 300W
HDD: None/removed (case sticker indicates it originally had a 100GB IDE HDD)
                ODD: Lite-On DVD-ROM/CD-RW...
