    External hdd cannot format

I have a 80 gig "Maxtor One Touch" that shows up in the disk manager but it shows unknown/unreadable. In the device manager it shows up as a Maxtor One Touch USB Device. I cannot format it in Disk Manager to make it readable. My OS is Vesta Home. I tried creating a dos partition with fdisk it tells me there is no space to create partition. Any suggestions/help greatly appreciated.

use the manufacturer's tool to format it.
if that fails too it's probably broken...

take it out of the case and test.
had a dead maxtor external come in for an emergency data recovery.
it would id but it could not be seen by any o.s.
smart status was perfect and it mounted without issue.
          easy job.

Thanks tried that not so lucky no go. I have downloaded the recovery cd from Maxtor site I don't know if that will help or not. i have to burn the iso. I also opened the drive in Winhex but I cannot write to it, shows "bad sectors" in right column. It reports "cannot read from sector 0" and other sectors. My guess is that the drive is shot? Is it common for it to show up in disk manager and not to be able to make it readable?
