I was driving past my local BMW garage a week ago, they have a nice big LED sign outside....same thing ! my daughter wouldn't let me go back and take a photo.

that's stupid, a signboard could just have a rapsberry-pi / orange-pi or similar in it.
wasted money - hardware & software!

This is too funny! I had no idea weather stations used Windows for those forecasts. I wonder if all of them do. Those machines must be hooked up to the net. I wonder if anyone's going to try finding their IP addresses and hacking in. How cool would it be during the weather part of the news to see a BadCaps.net logo, 2600 logo, or something similar?

Puzzling why the PC is not on a domain with proper management.

because it's the only windows pc and has a specific function probably.

i have worked in a news studio once, they arent a network of shitbox windows machines.
you have the gfx and typsetting people on osx (probably because - hype)
the field reporters use a mix of tablets(usually crapple) and laptops with whatever they are shipped with,

and the studio will have whatever it needs for specific software.
that weather thing must be pretty new, they used to do it with SGI Ingigo2's
backed tape-control etc is usually Linux based.

hey Spork, last year CNN or FOX - i forget which, got hacked.
the led running message display behind the reporters that normally does nasdaq etc and breaking news was scrolling all kinds of shit!!!

Cool! We have one of those signs on the side of the road once in awhile that says stuff like Road will be closed from blah to blah do to road work. I'd love to figure out how to hack one of those to add the 2600 message or something, at the end of the normal message. I'd keep the original message, there's usually like 3 pages or so worth of messages that they flash across. That'd be great!

Also, SGI Ingigo2's. Where they the purplish coloured ones? We saw these SGI's that we called SGI Indy's. I wonder if they're the same. Man, would I love to get my hand on an SGI. Even if it's an older one.

I forgot to say, I told my wife about the 10 credit card thing. She's willing to try a Linux Live disc to see if she loves it. Can you recommend a good starter flavour? I was thinking maybe Ubuntu.

cant remember if it was either kubuntu or xubuntu that looked and felt very much like windows and was recommended for windows to linux converts. i could be wrong tho so dont quote me on that.

Was thinking of letting her try that Ubuntu. I used it a long time ago. I started with Slackware and moved to Debian. Over the years, I ran a few different ones, OpenSUSE, Gentoo, my own custom distro (just the kernel and then packages I manually compiled, no package manager or anything), Ubuntu, Mint, etc.

If they make live discs for Kubuntu and Xubuntu, I'll download both so she can check them out. It'd be wonderful if she finally switched! I'm actually starting to like Windows 10 now! All these years, and all it took was Windows 10 to get her to start using Linux!

Suse was my first. Barely installed a few flavors. Mainly stick with mint although some tiny and puppy variants are handy. Then ubuntu got bloated as hell so mint did also i switched to xfce version. One day maybe arch again or another odd flavor.

Don't do a disc. USb or virtual drive. Oh and don't think it's windows like. I'll say the same i did for mac... Just because you have few users does not mean you are secure. I meant to say security breaches wide open not users but goes with the theme.

indigo2's - old ones are green, newer are purple.
                          indy's afaik are blue.
btw, there are 2 boards cpu's used in indigo2 - look at the badge.
if it says IMPACT10000 then it is 64bit with an R10000 cpu,
if not then it's 32bit with an R4000-R4400

the 64bit ones can carry upto 1.5gigs of ram - that's serious ram for a 486 era machine!!

What do you mean by a virtual drive? Do you mean install it in a virtual machine? I could setup a thumb drive so she can save her settings, files, etc. I used to use Ubuntu but every freaking time there was an update, it seemed my sound card broke and I'd have to fix it. And then, like you said, it just kind of got bloaty. I thought xfce was a desktop environment, not a distro.

I used to link Gentoo but in the end, I switched, because of how much time it took to compile some of the packages. I did like how every package was custom compiled for my machine though.

I've never ran Arch, to my knowledge, but I've heard who have ran it. My VPS is running CentOS. It's very basic and lightweight, so that's good.

It was sooo long ago, it's hard to remember. I was in high school. My friends and I started this computer club. The first one our high school ever had. We did cool stuff, we got private tours of Corning, Inc, Sullivan Park, etc. We had some private tour of this facility down by the airport where they made simulators. I could have sworn they were purple, so maybe they were Indigo's. I want to say I remember something about R10000 but I could be wrong. When they were giving us the tour of the simulation building, we saw the SGI's and asked if we could play with them and they said no. They just had one sitting on a self. We had more questions about that than the simulators!

They asked for a volunteer to try and drive the train. My friend volunteered. They showed him the controls but never told him he had to start out really slow like. He started really fast and derailed the train. After doing so, they said he had to start out real slow. He wanted to try again but they wouldn't let him. It was a rip off!!!

There's some program my friend used to run for Linux. It allowed you to switch between the different window managers and desktop environments at login. At the login screen, you could click something and pick stuff like KDE, Gnome 2, Gnome 3, XFCE, etc. Does anyone know what that program is called? I'd like to setup something like that for my wife.

that's the window manager, i know Debian can do that, probably SuSE too.

btw, did you know that some of the SGI engineers left and started NVIDIA??
that's why the TNT and then G-Force kicked the hell out of the competition out of nowhere.
they were based on the best 3D hardware in the world at the time!

the reason they didnt let you play with the Indigo2 IMPACT system btw was the fact that it cost them over $60,000 just for the base system.
god knows how much they spent if they had "MAXIMUM-IMPACT" video option and/or the digital-video i/o option fitted.
(i have a pair of fully loaded ones btw!! )

The environment switcher actually is part of the display manager. Currently I am using 'gdm' as my display manager that can choose between Gnome3 and Xfce4. Probably the most popular display manager is lightdm.

Wow, that's insane! For some reason, I remembered them saying it costed over 30,000$. It could have been more like 50,000$ or 60,000$. They seemed to be irritated when we asked about it and mentioned something about if we just touched it, something bad would happen. I don't remember what it was. Like we'd get kicked out and never let back in or something. This one wasn't being used. It wasn't in a rack. Just sitting on a shelf. It looked a bit beat up, like maybe it was a part system or something.

I see I can buy one of those Indigo 2's for around 300$ on E-Bay. I bet it isn't all decked out. Probably doesn't even run. I almost thought of purchasing it.

Thank you Eccerr0r. I believe I understand. I didn't remember the name, "display manager". I use gdm as well. Can you add more than just two with gdm? And is the display manager tied to the distribution? Mostly, I use the console and don't do much in X. I'll create some root terminal sessions or normal terminal sessions to do my work. I'll have firefox or Chromium opened. Thanks for taking the time to answer this. I really want her to switch and it'd be horrible if she decided she didn't like it because she only tried that one Windows Manager or Desktop Environment, like Gnome 3. Maybe she'd like KDE better? Or Gnome Classic? I'd like to give her a bunch of options to try.
