    Medion 5000 v1.2 Mobo (MS-6701) Mobo

This has a CPU with a HSF, and HSF cowling (plastic clip-on type)

The HSF has the CPU welded to it - eek! Usually after use with the
HSF still warm you can twist the CPU off the HSF (with a bit of persuasion if you do it right)
But this CPU refuses to budge!

I believe the HSF is specific to the mobo and a Medion design by virtue
    of the HSF retaining clips.

The cowling is connected to a vent on the side of the case (by design)

I would like to upgrade the CPU in this mobo to a s478 HT 3.0/3.2GHz
It will have to be a Northwood 512k cache FSB 533

    Anyway,
Suggestions as to how to remove the P4 already attached please?

I would not like to destroy the CPU in place.

    Thx

Mount the CPU in a motherboard that has no retention bracket in place to get in your way then use a thin blade knife to slice off the heatsink.
Keep the knife's edge slightly toward the heatsink so you don't scratch the CPU.
Twist on the heatsink a little as you go and you can tell when it's starting to free.
(I don't mean twist with like a pry bar, okay....)

Kind scary but it usually works when there is no other way.

Thanks for that. I will give it a go.

This thing is stuck tighter than a gnat's chuff!

Dunno what heat cure or paste they must be using to get it solid as it is.

Do you think it may be a phase change material (here's hoping) and
becomes more maleable when heated or is just glue such as an epoxy?
Epoxy does have good thermal properties but I have never known it
used on a FRU such as a heatsink and CPU (for obvious reasons).

Thanks anyway. Will let you know how I progress.

Without knowing what is in there I can't say about heat.

Some kinds are brittle when cold and that can help too.
With the kind that's brittle if you can get a crack started though it the crack will keep going, if you warm it up then it won't crack it will just flex like semi-hard glue.

If it's really tough the place the jig-motherboard on a board and drill at least two holes in the board through the retention bracket holes.
With the board aligned to the holes put screwdrivers through the board into the holes.
[Might need another pair of hands next.]
Use the shafts of the screwdrivers to keep the board from moving...
.. and use one as leverage against the back of the knife.

It is the usual phase change thermal pad, i would bring the cpu up to max temp by disabling the fan and running prime or hot cpu. Then it should be possible to disassemble with a little force.

Apart from that, acetone or a sharp knife as mentioned will work too.

Just a thought - What about using a hot air gun?

I have one of these for use with sleeving and it can run hot (very).
              see for example - http://heatshrink.com/prod-steinel-hg.htm
This has attachments for very localised use.

Get the HSF hot and remove as with methods mentioned above?
Or would this simply fry the CPU?

Beware: cpu junction temps are around 80-85 °C, so if you heat a lot the cpu you can damage it even if is not operating.
I'd try the PCBONEZ' knife approach: put the cpu into a socket and twist the heatsink. It requires some torque, so be gentle and try to move it slowly. OTOH, acetone may melt the termal compound enough to clean and twist it easily.

Ok - thanks for the insight

Will try the acetone approach first - less likely to cause damage - ermm...

                    Sorry: I never tried it.
The most dangerous chemical I used once is trichloro-ethylene, which is really toxic and it's still sold in Italy as a stain-remover called "Trielina". It melted easily an old Pentium 3 termal pad, but I felt a bit dizzy after using it, though I cleaned the heatsink on my house balcony during a windy day.

So I suggest to stick with acetone and isopropyl alcohol: they are safer for you and should remove the pad effectively.

i heat the heatsink by blowing thru it with a heatgun.
once hot you can pry GENTLY on the area outside the heatspreader.
i remove any plastic parts to avoid melting them.

I relented with this job as I was getting nowhere trying to
                        get the HSF removed.

As it was a 2600/512/400 Northwood, I simply moved the whole
HSF and duct to another mobo. It was bit tricky trying to get
the assembly to drop into the socket with the cpu socket
clip closed but a little persuasion got there in the end.

                        It works fine.

So now, I'll just get a CPU for the former board and try to
get a HSF with duct to the side panel as before.

As the case is small, it was there for a reason in the first instance.

                        Thanks for the help
