    Odd laptop problems...

Well got my new(er) laptop yesterday (Compaq Evo N610c), but I am having some odd issues with it. It is hard to get it to POST, the power light will come on but nothing else happens at all. No drives or fans spin up. If I try it a few times, it will boot up completely, but will freeze up randomly, sometimes causing the screen to go black.

Other times, such as right now, it will work perfectly for hours. I'm running a Ubuntu live CD and it's been going for a couple hours now, but earlier I was trying to re-install WinXP and it locked up while formatting

The battery is shot and won't even take the slightest charge. Can that cause problems? I've tried running it without the battery but it still seems unstable. I hate to spend $50 on a new battery if there are other problems. The AC adapter is a Delta, and seems to be in good shape.

Found out today that pressing on the left palm rest would make it lock up. I reseated the RAM which was right underneath, and it seems to be fine now. I guess only time will tell.

Also did a fresh install of Windows, which more than doubled the speed. I think the OEM install of WinXP was bloated with crap from the factory.

thats a nice laptop. sounds like you are on the right track. if it starts doing it again then check for cracked solder joints.

a nice laptop indeed, I am actually using one right now - good software for CPU clock controlling on this machine is SpeedswitchXP, little old bud great. Also, if you would like to dim the light down even further [or to pure black if you will] - you can use speedfan to do this, fan 02 controls the screen backlight brightness

Are there any places on this laptop that are prone to broken solder? I also noticed that the bottom of the keyboard is being used for a heatsink on what appears to be the GPU and North Bridge. I took the keyboard off while it was powered up and it promptly locked up

This one has the bluetooth module installed in the top cover, which I have no use for. I'm trying to get my hands on the wifi module instead. That and upgrade the RAM to 1GB. And maybe add a DVD-RW, and of course a new battery.

By the time I'm done upgrading this, I'll have spent almost $400 total on it. Guess that's what happens when you buy a $200 laptop Though I do like the performance compared to some newer laptops that share the video and system RAM. At least this one has 32MB of dedicated video RAM.
