    Bios Password.

New York State just changed their vehicle inspection machines. From the NYVIP to the NYVIP2.. The old machine is now defunct and ours to do what we wish with.

I would like to re-purpose it to a shop computer.

It's an IBM Think Center MTM 8187-scu. The state has this thing locked up pretty tight (software wise) I wouldn't mind learning a thing or two about security.

I can get to the BIOS but can not save changes, It's looking for an admin password. It will ONLY boot to the hard drive. All other choices are locked out.

I could always open it up remove the battery and jump the clear CMOS pins, but I would like to learn something in the process..

Any way of getting around this? Software is pretty secure, can't get to DOS or crash the system They have locked out several keys (like ESC ALT CTRL) hitting them is an invalid key and you have to hit enter to continue.

Doing a bit of research already I see something, "Promise of value card" ? Can anyone elaborate ?

they actually left the HDD's in these machines? I'm kind of shocked by that. Just do a search for the procedure to clear a BIOS password, its not hard on desktop machines.

In theory that data was erased after we did the "shut down station function".
I will play with it a bit next week, and see what happens.

I assume the state will NOT give out the password until ALL the stations go online with the new equipment. That should be Dec. 1st.

look on the motherboard and find the battery.... remove the battery and then put it back in.... easier than finding the clear_cmos jumper
