    New laptop! weird shit

I just got an 'open box' laptop from newegg. Why it was returned, the previous owner tried to use the 'administrator' account in win8 and locked himself out (except at boot-from hibernation/lock/sleep, it said his account was disabled)

Anyhoo, its an Acer V3-771-6485. Wonderful 17" screen, i5, Intel 4000 graphics + Nvidia GT 730

installed win7 and all the latest intel chipset drivers, Intel management engine. Pretty much all latest drivers. It pisses me off a bit I can't get synapitics generic driver to work cause I LOOOVE Chiral scrolling. Elan sucks but its what i'm stuck with

I do have this strange issue though. I can get it to sleep by lid close, but not wake up by lid open, I open the lid, I have to press a button on the keyboard. Its not going into hibernate, it really is sleep

    anyone have ANY idea?

Possibly a driver related issue. The laptop is likely physically just fine. I would think it wouldn't matter that much, but if it's a major concern to you, you might try contacting Acer's tech support?

Because that driver sometimes has other "laptop stuff" in it. Like say a Software-controlled ALS or say a Dell Wifi Catcher switch.

I have a vaio that is the same way with w7. I open it and then press the space bar to wake it up. I never worried about it.

                  Re: New laptop! weird shit

A lot of laptops do this, It's more and more common. In fact, every single laptop I have had in my shop as of late that's not ancient does this. Possibly a few exceptions. Some will wake up with the space bar if you do it right away after manual sleep, say less than 30sec maybe. Otherwise they lock they keyboard.
                  I wouldn't worry about it.
But I know us nerds like to worry about these sorts of things cause they bug us, right?

I thinly It's kinda LAME!! But I got used to it.

                  Ex.
One time back in the late Win98/early XP days, I spent countless dozens of hours troubleshooting a way to fix/stop Windows from probing the stinkin' floppy at login! Uuuuugggggghhhhhhhhhh ggggggggrrrrrrrrr it annoyed the daylights out of me! Eventually I gave up on it. These were virgin installs on custom builds too!
I just learned to live with it. Now I disable the stupid floppy drives on systems that still have them, or a controller. Along with legacy ports, every bit speeds up POST and HW initialization at OS boot.

I have never tried to "fix this", what you describe, but you might try disabling "hybrid sleep" in the advanced power options for your power profile. Although it should be off by default for a laptop install. Make sure hibernate is off as well, just for testing purposes. Good to have it on for when the battery konks out while sleeping and such. So switch it back on when done. At an admin prompt: "powercfg -h off" Replace off with on after done testing, don't forget to reboot.

Also, disable system restore while you're at it, most worthless, worst space/resource hog EVER! Use ERUNT instead, works with all x86/64 Win OSs too, but you have to write a scheduled boot task to run it. That is assuming you boot it often enough, otherwise set it for whenever works for you. It's somewhere on his site how to do it, or Google it.
Way better than sys restore and no resource usage.

You could also try a BIOS upg/reset to defaults.

funny updating the bios was one of the first things I did (should of mentioned it)

I disabled hybrid sleep last night, same result

maybe cause these laptops don't' have a latch? they're afraid of people accidentally taking them out of sleep

My laptop has settings for it. I don't remember how/where though.

I don't like the turn on on lid opened features, I had my laptop in a bag once and I hadn't closed it all the way. I closed it enough to put it in sleep mode though. Well i mush have bumped the bag around and at one point I felt the bag was very hot. Yeah, no damage go the computer, but I turned off the auto-power on thing. xD

Why would you not want to hear the floppy drive?

By disabling all of the useless stuff (does anybody even use IEEE1394 any more?) I got the family computer to finish POSTing before the monitor even warms up (yes, it's a CRT). The biggest boost probably came from disabling the IDE controllers.

acer contacted me back and said this is normal behavior for this model. *sigh*

I spent 6 hours last night trying to resolve the synapitics issue with no help. even fucked with the registry a lot. the synapitics driver serivce is loaded as an upperfilter ontop of the main keyboard/mouse subsystem, but the software still refuses to see the loaded driver.

Let me tell you a little bit about what happened to my laptop (MSI GF63 THIN 11UCX model: MS-16R6) that “maybe” you know how to solve this problem.

So before this problem happened, my laptop was running smoothly. When I wanted to restart my laptop, it looked fine at first. But after I waited for this restart process to take a long time, until finally I panicked (because the restart process did not finish plus the laptop screen only showed a black screen), I immediately pressed and held the power button to force the laptop to turn off. But...
