Re: SSD suggestions

eccerr0r, shovenose and c_hegge; what OSs do you run on these SSDs and what's the workstation/server's primary task and level of workload?

shovenose, If you prefer Intel to Sammy, how come you use Sammy in your server builds? Very curios, seeing as Intel is all about business.

Makes sense! You should go check newegg, see what's in your price range, then narrow down the specs from there on Logitech's site. It'll say what type of wheel it is and if it's dual purpose or not. I think they all are though, least with Logitech.
They have an OEM pg. too, it has more models and such that aren't otherwise listed.

It can, my couch mouse is this way. It becomes quite "clicky", I hate it in "click mode", I find it much, much faster to use and far more efficient in hyper scroll made.

RD, why don't you like the hyper scroll mode, ie. what are you referring to with "hotbar scrolling"?
I know many UI elements and their respective names, this one is not coming to mind.

Edit: Aaahh, you must be referring to a UI element in Minecraft, huh? Inventory?
I was thinking OS, not gaming....

TOOO FUUUNNNYYY!!!

That's what I was thinking, but where to get a rubber sheet locally? It seems whenever I go looking for such basic materials... no one has it, forcing me to order it on the interwebs and spend hours looking for it.
I really do try to buy local, when I can find it, or don't get ripped off when I do find it.
Thought about Amazon... talk about a dizzying number of options.

Cool website!! Thanks!!...

WOW!! Somebody's hard on a mouse!! LOL
Only 4 years? Mine is nearly 5 years old and still works a treat, but, then again, I don't play catch with it. ...

Nope, not a typo, or a cause and effect of that pesky auto correct.... it's just a joke. I heard this waaayyy back in the day on DALNET/EFNET on IRC, like late 90's IIRC.
They were calling laptops, "lapdogs". HAHA
Probably because they get so toasty, who knows!

Maybe they got it from the Angelina Jolie film "Hackers", but I don't remember it being in there, just: "Did your mom buy you a puter for Christmas?". LOL
Interestingly enough, I did find this:...

Yup, same as mine goontron.
Well.... almost! Mine looks newer and doesn't say "wave" on it. *waves at receiver*
BTW, nice pile of stuff on the floor... somewhat resembles my office. A true nerd!

RD, The new unifying receivers are eensy weensy though.
So small, you just plug them into a lapdog and leave them.
Even surviving a lapdog bag. HEHE

Shovenose, my couch mouse has a range of at least 10-12ft. using the unifying receiver, so does my other newer mouse that I...

RD, here's one of my famously lengthy and detailed, thorough postings.
I hope you enjoy it and that everyone finds use in it.

I have a Logitech LX8 invisible wavelength, cordless laser mouse, so no light other than the green on/off switch on the bottom, which only glows green when you remove the mouse from the mousing surface.

It has a back button on the left side, just above the thumb rest and a forward button on the right side, just above the right finger rest where your pinkie & ring finger rest....

• Source for missing laptop feet... ideas?

I have been wondering this for ages, what is a good 3rd party product/raw material, that can be used to replace those pesky rubber feet, that invariably become dislodged from their glued moorings on laptops?

Sure, you can buy them on eBay, if you want to pay upwards of, or over: $5/pad, averaging about $15-20 or more for all of them. YIKES!!!!

What do you do for replacements, any ideas?
Is there maybe a place you have found a suitably thick and malleable raw sheet of natural rubber that you buy, where you can cut your own from it??

As for glue,...

Thanks Ratdude!
I really appreciate that, it means a lot to me, as seldom does anyone thank someone on a forum.
I'm glad it was helpful.

Peace out bro! ...

• Linux & Flash HW Acceleration... seemingly impossible? =/

Sorry for the kinda long post, about 1/2 of it lists what I have attempted, so I outlined that so you can skim it if need be. But I tried to keep that as short as possible also.

Hello,
Linux nerds & my fellow computer techs/nerds!

If I could pick your brains here...
I have been trying to get Adobe Flash 11.2.x/Chrome Pepper Flash to perform hardware acceleration in various Ubuntu distros. As of late I have really been liking Mint Olevia + Cinnamon quite a bit, but not really set on any one DE/GUI at this point.

Re: SSD suggestions

Not that I'm 100% an Intel fanboy, or anything close. In fact, I try NOT to be a "fanboy" at all, it tends to instill blindness to the point that you can't see the forest for the trees after a while. IE. The company you're a fanboy/fangirl for, at some point, becomes such in your mind that they can do no wrong!

Not a place I ever want to be, so I always keep my options open when it comes to the tech world and most of my nerdly interests.

With that said, I'd like to add that I feel Intel's SSDs are simply incredible!!...

• Soldering a rear window defogger clip?

Can this be done with a standard iron, my WTCPS Weller station, or is it nigh impossible to keep from breaking the window glass with the heat of the iron?

My neighbor came to me and wanted to know if I could do this, as his father in law, a well seasoned good mechanic, said it has to be done with a cold solder unit. Which I don't have, as they're not good for electronics.

Just curious if I can help him out with my tools, or if it's too risky to his window.

Thx for answering my rather off-topic soldering question.

• Re: Any tips for my first recapping? (iMac G5)

Oracle, I must respectfully disagree with that statement, but not in the sense of practical application, only that iMac G5s in fact DO use Pb free solder. I know 1st hand.
Which is what further adds to the immense PITA factor of repairing them.
However, I do agree with the rest of what you posted.
I will add and to clarify against any confusion, that leaded solder mixing with existing lead free solder joints is wise, as it improves wetability of the joint in both desoldering and resoldering operations,...

What's the psu?
Swap it with a known good one from a friend's system, IR another of your own.

Also, what you describe sounds like flux residue, but I see that you haven't posted a photo of thay part, did I miss something?
What are you pointing out in the photos you did post? They are quite blurry.

Ooooohhhhh SNAP!
I wish I were still like, 12!!!

Telstar was launched in the very early 60s as the 1st public communications satellite, which I'm pretty sure was digital, seeing as it operated in the 4GHz and 6GHz band. Really, everything started going digital with the invention and beginning widespread use of the transistor in the early 1950s.

But really, how do we define digital when it comes to communication? Being that it's all just sound waves occupying an RF spectrum, is it really technically digital? Sound...

• Re: APC Back-UPS NS 1250

Anything close, anything that even simply fits the connectors with the same width terminals?

Typically It's not a matter of whether the battery will work, but of amperage runtime and shape/physical dimensions of the case. Well, asside from the terminals that is. But there are only 2 types that APC typically uses, one narrow F1 (0.187") and one wider F2 (0.250").

• Re: Recapped MSI 865 Neo2-V onboard LAN and PCI slots not working yet

So was it doing this before you recapped it?

Again, having photos would help a ton!
Plus, it'd sure be nice to know the answers to some of my initial questions. I know you say the caps are good that you replaced the old ones with, but these are the cap experts here and it helps us to know what you're working with. Also, there are a lot of fakes out there.

Lastly, I'm not even remotely an expert at diagnosing circuits so I really can't help on that level as I'm still learning...

Probably a silly question, but are you just testing capacitance, or are you also testing ESR?
Care to post some photos?

What's an analog satellite receiver? Satellites are all digital and have been since day one as far as I know.
Do you mean analog SD outputs only?

I wanted to add....
That is an absolutely beautiful circuit board, a work of art!
I can't stop looking at it for some reason. Thanks for the purdy pics!

This is a synthesizer, like a keyboard, not a sound mixing board, right? How many layers is it?
