optical drive laser failure if not used for a long time?

i have an lg dvd burner, a gsa h10n. been using it for a long period (one year) to read dvds only. then one fine day when i popped in a cd to do system backup and recovery, i found out that it could not read or detect whatever cd i put in the drive but when i put in a dvd, it works fine.

my question is what can cause the cd reading laser to fail if its not used for a long time? that xbox laser failure and burning 24 dvds topic prompted me to start this thread here to ask this.

it cannot be a dusty cd reading laser, can it? that would affect the dvd laser as well, wont it? i tried using one of those cd/dvd cleaning discs but no dice... i suppose they dont really work and are just marketing gimmicks...

looks like i have to get down to replacing the laser assembly too... its an old ide dvd drive so cant buy a new one as they're all sata...

The CD laser is used for a second or two when the tray is closed to determine if a CD is present.

Your motherboard doesn't have a SATA controller?

Don't know for sure, but I'd say it's a possibility. You would have to take apart the whole laser assembly, though. If it still doesn't work, maybe try a new CD laser.

Probably. Seeing how they don't touch the lens (if they did, that would be a disaster, wouldn't it), I don't think they really do anything either.

They do touch the lens. They have brushes on the bottom. I clean laser lenses with cotton swabs all the time. They don't explode or anything.

HP Pavilion dm4-1065dx long time to get the power led on
          by OscarAV
          Hello,

I just came here to see if someone has had the same problem I have, and if he or she solved It, to know how to do It.

I have made a quick search for my laptop but I have not seen anything similar.

I have an old laptop, an HP Pavilion dm4-1065dx which takes a lot of time to be ready to start if the laptop has been unplugged for a while. It has no battery. The battery failed long time ago. It needs to be plugged to work. But as I said, It can take a lot of time until the charging led gets on, and I can switch on the laptop. I am using an external monitor...

Light bulb flicker when turning on after long time off.
          by sew333
Hello. I have question. I dont know if i have faulty wiring, bad installation or its bulb. When i have lights off long time and turn on lightning ( bulb halogen ) , there is a for 2-3 second bulb dimm/flicker and its normal. Happens only when lightning is off long time and i turn on.

When i turn off lights and turn on again its fine. That flicker/dimm happens only when lights are off long time.
That happens for example if i have lights off 2-3 hours and turn on.
          Thx

High Pressure Sodium Yard light when air conditioner turns light momentarily turns of
          by sam_sam_sam
I have had these 70 watt high pressure sodium yard lights for many years now probably at least 15 years or more and there is a protection diode that after several years starts to go bad and when it does this it has momentarily shutting down the light and then a few minutes later it starts working again

This about the forth time I have fixed this one and you can tell if it the diode or not if it lights up and it only shuts down when the air conditioner turns on then it is the diode

If it cycling on and off constantly then it is the bulb itself that is the issue

          XPS 13 7390 2-in-1. No Power On.
          by horsebatterystaple
I've got a XPS 13 7390 (2-in-1 variant) that I've used every day without issue for 2.5 to 3 years now. Specs and failure info are below. This model has an SSD that's soldered to the board with some very important information on it that I need back. I have a bit of experience in electronics repair from years ago (my dad was one of the first-gen computer repairmen, but most of my knowledge is from desktop motherboards with interchangeable components-- not netbooks with microsoldering. Pointers would be very much appreciated.

It should go without saying that I did only cursory research...
