If you keep getting that connect/disconnect sound in Windows, that's a very clear indication of cable going bad. I've seen this many times with cheap and/or mistreated USB cables.

    Like this?

If yes, those are amazing mice IMO. Not very high resolution, but they are very accurate and roll very smoothly due to their larger diameter pickup rollers. Only downside is lack of scroll wheel. The slightly newer model, the M-S69 is a little more curvy and has a scroll wheel. It's my favorite mouse of all time for sure.

That's a really reliable mouse, but very cumbersome to hold IMO. It also has tiny pickup rollers inside, so accuracy is horrible. It gets even worse when a bit of dirt accumulates on the rollers. Since they have a small diameter, the mouse often starts to "click" or "skip" in certain patterns.

I only keep them for spare buttons.

Same here. I also like the predictability of ball mice when you lift them off the mouse pad. The good ones will stop moving, just the way it should be. Can't say the same for laser and optical mice. Most tend to jiggle for a bit.

The oldest hardware I have that I still use is an HP-branded Trinitron A4032A 17" CRT monitor. Made in Japan, built in 1994 - built to last!

I used to use the Wheel Mouse Optical for gaming, but I can't on this laptop. The cursor jumps around randomly, it sometimes doesn't register clicks or double-clicks, and it scrolls up and down randomly. I'm starting to think that Microsoft broke the driver in Windows 7 so you would have to buy a new mouse.

Of course, the Logitech wireless mouse I have isn't very good. The cursor moves in a sine wave (really), and it even moves diagonally when I try to move the mouse horizontally on some surfaces. I also have a Microsoft wireless mouse that works great on every surface I've tried it on, but the build quality isn't as good as the Logitech and the metal around the USB connector is loose.
I haven't tried this particular mouse (which is still behaving after the unplug/replug cycle!) on my win 7 laptop but I've used it with Win2k (pro and Advanced Server), Win XP, Win 2k3, Vista, 7 and 8 on my various desktops over the years with no issues whatsoever

My Microsoft optical 5000 mice (the white/silver ones with 5 buttons) were my favorite but they kept dying on me. Like the opical sensors were slowly going bind (I kept the senor lenses clean too). Now I use a dynex branded mouse with the same 5 button layout (one button on each side, not two on one side). I also use a micorsoft moblile mouse 6000 for my laptop but I've busted three, the first two replaced under warranty, the third I gave up on and fixed myself (still a POS quality wise).

I hate how nobody makes a laptop sized mouse with 5 buttons in the layout I like.

Sure is, mine did that too after an overheat.

no. This one is a few years old

the left mouse button got so worn it would require me to press it harder and harder. I got my soldering iron and 'extended' the plastic tooth from the button by melting it in a downward direction a few mm

Re: A sad day in my household...

The battery in my Microsoft wireless mouse (a Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500) already died. I got it earlier this year and didn't use it very often. The battery is supposed to last 8 months. Also, I've recently noticed that the buttons are extremely loud. I don't know why I never noticed that before. It makes me look like one of those idiots who have to press the buttons as hard as they can like they're trying to break it. It also double-clicks or doesn't register clicks, just like the Wheel Mouse Optical. Every mouse I've tried on this laptop sometimes double-clicks when you press the button once. Only the laptop's touchpad doesn't do that.

I think this has turned into a random mouse discussion thread.
