I have a client's GA-7ZXE which i had recapped a while ago with panasonic FC. it has been running rock solid since then. then one day when they were using google earth the computer shut down and when it restarted the hdd was clicking and the computer was not booting.
so i assume that it is HDD problem (2001 WD which should be replaced anyway). I get a new seagate 7200.9 120gb and proceed to use seatools to scan the disk fully as a normally do with a new drive. On starting seatools the counter proceeds and then stays at 80% for longer than usual (strange). Then i run quick test and when it gets to 100% either 1. the mouse is unresponsive and stays that way or 2. the computer starts constantly beeping.
so i proceed to test the new hdd on a known good pc. on starting the seatools counter is normal and it tests fine for the full test. so i put the new hdd back on the suspect pc and install XP which installs fine. after finishing i shut it down and then the next day when i started the computer i get clicking on the new HDD and the computer is not booting.
so i am guessing that the psu is not good and i replace with a known good one and also replace the hdd cable with a known good one. i am trying seatools again but same situation, even with limit to 32gb jumper set (which it shouldnt need really).
- is there some incompatibility with seatools for this mobo?
- or am i looking at hdd controller problem?
- what is the recommended setting for "enhance ide perfomance" in the bios for these boards? i have tried with it enabled or disabled anyway.
the old hdd is responding so there is probably chance to save the data but the xp install on that hdd is hosed (fails to startup properly)
