    Specific Manufacturers of Video Cards

My company is replacing dozens of video cards made by GeForce FX5200, due to bad caps. Now we've selected a SPARKLE SF8834DT256MB (alternate eVGA 128-A8-N306-LX) to replace the GeForce.

Does anyone know whether these particular manufacturers have a clean record with regard to bad caps? Or did we jump out of the frying pan into the fire?

Moved out of FAQ and fixed the title.

Geforce 5200FX is a model of GPU chip by nVidia. Decent chance somebody else made the card... the chip companies stopped making entire cards around the time of the 5200fx IIRC.

Anything older by eVGA (pre-poly caps) is probably riddled with Sacon FZ firecrackers. They recap well but w/o a recap are junk. Not sure about sparkle...

-> Especially GeForce 7 series! That's the worst GeForce series for bad caps.

Nobody has a clean record. I see low end server boards going out with UCC KZG and KZJ. I know where those will be in 3 years.

Capacitors change from run to run. They can pick from 3 categories: bad caps from bad brands, bad caps from good brands, and good caps from good brands. The only real way to tell if you've gotten the shaft is to compare some brands and type codes to the bad and good lists.

On somebody's recapping bench? Nah, another one of those "AS IS! Tested and WORKZ!" overpriced ebay/criagslist listings.

I would say go with someone that has a lifetime warranty but it appears you are looking at replacing AGP cards (from your SPARKLE SF8834DT256MB choice) so you might consider having your cards recapped and save some money to go into replaceing the systems themselves.

Even worse: brand new in box product.

Seems that we're all alone in our knowledge of KZG. Designers seem to believe the specs that put them along side Panasonic and Sanyo.

                  Curious question...
If you do end up replacing those FX5200 video card, what are you going to do with them?

As brethin suggested, you can have them recapped for fairly cheap. However if you don't want to do that and you decide to throw them away, maybe post an ad on the "For Sale" forum, especially if those video cards are PCI and not AGP.

Re: Specific Manufacturers of Video Cards

I think EVGA now uses only good caps (after going through Sacon FZ and Sam Young but now mostly FP with a few conventional 100uF CapXons), and I believe PNY and 3Dfuzion have long used only good brands. My PNY FX5200 card with puny heatsink and Sanyo WX caps has outlasted two EVGA FX5200 cards.
