    MSI 975X Platinum 2.b

    Guys,

This is from a preview thread by Coolaler of xtremesystems. The caps on the board look like Rubycon, right?

Looks like a mix of FCs (blue with gold markings) and FMs (black with gold markings).

          Yep, Panasonic. T-vents.

If there's a good PSU on that, it should last a while.

The CPU is a Kentsfield quad-core (Conroe Extreme Edition) with 4 x 2MB L2 cache, right? By the look of the monster heatsink on it, it's not going to run cool, nor is it going to be able to fit in a 1U cabinet anytime soon. But the next 12 months of the Intel-AMD spat is going to be very interesting...

Aah o.k, I'm still a newb guys so don't be too hard on me.

Yes, its a Kentsfield Quad monster! The HSF is not stock however. It is an aftermarket solution, probably the new Thermalright one. That CPU OC's from 2.4-->3.2GHz on stock volts! That's going to be one bad ass monster!!

Your Tuniq Tower 120 is rated as one of the best for cooling with air. But it scales in at 795g w/o a fan. A fan would add another 120+g. Most boards are rated for a 500g HS that sits low on the chip. Because it is high & heavy, use real care when moving the case, never transport the rig with the sink attached. Aside from weight, another disadvantage of these cross flow HSs(Ninja included), is the board population is not getting any scrubbing, cooling air. This can have an impact on the long term life of board caps.

You will note that some vertical HSs are tilted so the discharge air is directed at the VRM & caps between the CPU & I/O plate. The arctic Cooling Freezer Pro has it's lower fins curved for this purpose.

Given a choice, I'd use a SI-120 but go with the Tuniq if you already have it, just note what I've said about board cooling & weight.

SuperNade, this should prove to be a good read. Note PWM (VRM/FETs) temps/cooling. This heat is linked to the caps through the board traces.

Ye I read the one on ocforums. A 120mm holder was long overdue. I wonder how CF and SLI folks feel about this? The fan would touch an SLI or CF card for sure.
