    Hi,

I am a collector of vintage computers and am trying to revive a motherboard from Gateway 2000 486 machine. It has an Intel Classic R mobo. It would boot into CMOS and you could make changes and save, but when you tried to boot from floppy or hard drive it would always say the drives failed. Because of past experience with bad tantalums and Aluminum Electrolytics, I tested those first with a multimeter. Found several that were shorted and was combing the web for suggestions for high quality components when I hit this site. Lots of good info and has helped me greatly in making a decision on what brand to buy.
Also found from a manufacturers site that one of the causes of failed capacitors is high ripple current from a bad power supply. Turns out high ripple will cause the mobo capacitors to overheat and prematurely fail. After I recap the mobo, I'll put the oscilloscope on the power supply and make sure ripple is low coming out of it.

Thanks again for the valuable info!

    Chuck
