Compaq presario 2100 bios

A friend flashed his laptop with the wrong bios, now the thing is completely dead.
It has a small square bios chip soldered directly to the mainboard. I was curious if anyone, like TC or K8CDU, could remove, reflash and install this bios chip or if a bios chip was purchased, could one of you install it. How much if you can do this?

I do not want to touch it with my newb soldering skills.

first, you'll have to get a BIOS ROM with the correct image on it, or replacing it won't do any good.

I've found them to be very professional, and they helped me resurrect a $400 dual athlon server board that had been misflashed. I just paid $25 for a whole new BIOS chip instead of having them reflash the one I had. Quicker that way...

I know a correct image is needed, I didnt know if one of you guys had the little programming machine that could reflash the chip outside of the board. If needed a chip could be ordered from someone preloaded. I would just rather have a pro replace the chip instead of myself. It really sucks its not a removable socket.

Stand-alone Programmers are available that can program just about any FlashROM or programmable device, but they can be fairly expensive for industrial-grade units. You may find one of these at computer service shops, who'll program new flashROMs for a fee.

As mentioned on the thread, Badflash can supply new FlashROMS if you send the correct image across. That's probably your best bet.

I can do 28/32 DIP and 32PLCC packages up to 1MByte - I have a JED programmer. http://www.jedmicro.com.au/PROM.htm
The only thing is I'm a looonnnggg way away from most of you.
What is the exact numbering on the chip? (under the sticker)

iirc that unit has a flash recovery option.
install the floppy and feed it a disk with the proper .bin on it and see if you get any activity.
might be a key ot 2 to hold to get started.

I finally got the laptop from him. Its a 2199 and he flashed in a 2100 bios. It has no floppy. When I hit the power button the power light just blinks for a second and it goes off. I can hear the hard drive start to spin and it goes right back off.

Screwed?
