    portables pageant

this is the thread where you post your laptops/netbooks.

post specs, pics, accessories, and carrying cases. like a non-judged laptop pageant...

    and I shall start:

I only have one laptop currently in service. specs:

    dell latitude d400
    pentium m donthan LV 1.6ghz (2mb cache)
    intel 855GM chipset/graphics
    512mb ddr 2700 (soon to be 1gb 3200)
    12.1" 1024x768 LCD
    60gb 5400 seagate hard disk
    2 usb2.0 (one is d-bay compatible)
    headphone and mic ports
    VGA/serial ports
    4 pin firewire 400
    IR
    56k modem
    gigabit ethernet
    wireless g/b/a (broadcom)
    (future?) built in bluetooth 2.0
fedora 14/ windows xp pro dualbooted

    pictures:

    the laptop.

the bag. it is a partially re-stiched targus subcompact bag (came with an old compaq LTE my dad bought) with a handmade shoulder strap. the strap is made from the hardware of a ripped out strap (nice metal, no plastic) and a de-commissioned tai-kwon-do belt. it got hit by spilled bleach once and was replaced... I cut out the bad part and stitched and tied it to make the strap.

the bag needs a tux the penguin patch...

the goodies. i have in here:

    - microsoft 5 button optical mouse. my favorite mouse ever, i have yet to see an affordable laptop mouse with 5 buttons...
    -65W dell PA-12 brick.
    -firewire cable- you never know...
-ethernet cable- one of those oddball 4 wire ones... saves space but no possibility of gigabit...
    - 4 port usb hub- rebate freebie from fry's, it may be made by inland, but lsusb says it has an NEC controller. cable folds in unit for space savings
-inland card reader- matches hub, i modded it by flipping the usb 180ยบ so i can daisy-chain it to the hub. again, fold-in cord.
-mini bluetooth 2.1 adapter- a tiny iogear unit, it is plugged into the hub for storage. I use it to get 3g/ edge of my phone in the boonies.
    - (missing)- targus lock cable- bought on supersale, good to keep the goods locked during potty breaks in public.
    - (future)- extra battery

my canon bjc-85 laptop printer. not in current use, but canon and LD products still sell the cartridges for it... if i end up away from home for college next year, it and my stockpile of ink will come in handy... unlike my old bjc-70, this one works perfectly. not bad for $10 + a $3 brick (not counting costs for color and black only print heads, which was also cheap)

my port replicator. bought at purdue university surplus for $5, only fault is a bad headphone jack (no sound- may be software for all i know). it has 4 usb 2.0 ports (one d-bay), ps/2 m/k, serial, parallel, vga, dvi, s-video (composite adapter compatible), spdif, ethernet, and 56k modem .

since the laptop was w/o the d-bay adapter, i instead use the external dvd burner (iomega super dvd, $8 @ goodwill 2 yr ago). the keyboard is a hotkey-rich dell ps/2 keyboard i got for free... the mouse is in the side usb port on the laptop, that way i do not need a second mouse and if i pop it of the stand, my mouse is still live.

I do not have a desk/table for the port replicator yet... i use it on the floor currently.

So, what laptop/netbook hardware does the BCN crowd have?

    Toshiba 15" of some sort.

    They all work.

MacBook Pro - pre Unibody, with an 8600M which refuses to die.
MacBook - pre Unibody, cannot charge batteries, with a GMA950
PowerBook 12" - diagnosed with failing logic board. It amazes me how many people can't pick up on failing hard drives! 1.33GHZ model
Sony Vaio something with a Pentium M - Sony said it needed a new motherboard - swapped out RAM and all is well. Screen yellowing, casing cracked near trackpad buttons
Dell Latitude D600 - someone spilled wine on it
Dell Latitude D510 - needs a power jack

I have other laptops and the like, but not in service:

asus eee pc 1000HEb- cracked screen, jimmy-rigged usb port. trying to sell.

hitachi flora 270-gx - 550mhz celeron coppermine, bad keyboard, hollow dummy battery, cracked screen, ram getting stolen for another member who has a use for it. rare japanese import i got cheap on ebay

ibm thinkpad t22- 900mhz pIII, needs a new battery and more ram (takes pc100, not 133). I have a port replicator for it... never got around to installing xp home on it. (if anybody has a use for it, i might be willing to sell)

          I like Thinkpads.
I have a T42 at work which needs another screen.
I must also see if I can find a replacement palmrest for the R61i which includes a trackpad.

i like my latitude... it has a magnesium base and lid. my only beef is that the trackpoint has no middle button like the thinkpads do... I use the middle button a lot... hence why i have the trackpad and the trackpoint turned off in bios.

              Re: portables pageant

Trackpoint is OK, but I just can't use it for day to day. I never did get to grips with the analog controllers on the PS, PS2, PS3 or XBOX.

The D400 is a very nice laptop.

it is a nice laptop. $93 was not a bad ebay price (granted it had no HD or brick- it did have the caddy)?

what was funny was month or so after i bought it, my friend over here stevo 1012 got a d400 from his aunt for free... and it was in prettier shape and had the brick and d-bay dvd with it. lucky!

My work laptop - Dell Latitude D620.
My personal laptop - Dell Latitude D620.

                  Others in the house...

                  Sister's laptop - Dell Latitude D620.

                  Noticing a pattern here?

My mom's laptop is a maxed out Latitude D800 (since she likes the larger screen), flashed with Precision M60 bios for PC2700 support, in an Insprion 8600 case b/c case parts were cheaper than Latitude case parts. So, it's having a bit of an identity crisis, but it's a solid machine.

i like my d400 because it is compact... with college next year, fitting on a little desk could come in handy.

                                I think I have around 20 from P1 thru C2D.
The P3 and older are Gateways left over from when I refurbed those.
The rest are Panasonic Toughbook CF-51 and I have several each of the Pentium-M and C2D versions.
They are all either complete or I have enough parts to compete them.

yay! i found a new feature on my laptop

i noticed that the backup battery was awful large (bank of 8 button cell NI-CD's). I also rememebered that an old micron laptop i had mentioned int he manual that it could put to sleep and athe backup would power it in sleep for 10 min while you switched batteries.

well, did a test... thats what it is for. you can put it in sleep mode and switch batteries... since I now have 2 batteries (considering buying a 2nd new one), that makes it a lot nicer.

once I get the 1gb of ram for it, it will so kick the crap out of the dead eee pc...
