    SCSI adapter.......

hello everyone, serious help required.... i am in the urge of finding some sort of adapter from SCSI to "whatever works" (not other type of SCCI but ie. USB, SATA, IDE? and so).... these disks seem to be Wide Ultra320 SCSI, or at least are an 80-pin drives.

long story short: the server broke and they want to get some registry indexes of a main and huge database, for reasons i dont know, (dont really know much details since this server isnt in my unit) they cant rely on other hardware capable of accessing this type of media... so they have approached and required me this :/

My question is if someone's got something on this, if such adapters exists and if theres a link or a path i could follow, im even down to DIY stuff... i already am doing the necessary googling but i thought i'd ask here before gettin conclussions, based on the quality of replies ive recieved here before and to the urgency of obtaining data from those hdds...

Any helpful info is much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    peace.

    Re: SCSI adapter.......

What you need is three items, fix it to your computer and you can see or download all the files from the scsi 80-pin server hot-swap hdd.

    1) The scsi pci card refer here: http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/product...y/ASC-29160LP/

    2) The scsi internal cable with terminator refer here: http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/product...bles/int_scsi/

    3) This adaptor for 80 pins drive to 68pins cable.

    from DX or other supplier.

    Good Luck.

^ thanks, i am reading about this.

according to this, i would plug the 80 to 68 pin converter (#3) in my hdd then use the cable (#2) to attach it to the pci card (#1) installed on a workstation ? im guessing some drivers required for the card but im guessing they will come along with it?

      Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

eauyong; Welcome to Badcaps and great first post!
MXM, I can confirm what eauyong listed should work, of course you can use other SCSI cards etc but these are readily available and come quite cheap...

I have not seen SCSI > USB, Firewire or SATA external boxes, like you can buy for IDE and SATA harddrives to easily get the data off such drives
But even if they existed they would be quite expensive, because SCSI is very very different to those protocols, and the market for something like this is very small so no benefit of big production runs lowering costs...

Well as you see it's really expensive
I'd just go for the PCI card or PCIe card instead, much cheaper and more probable to actually work

You can see that thing has been hacked together, I'd be afraid to power up something that is critically important on a hack job like that!

            http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IBM-06P2215-AD...item35ac89d0d3

            http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ADAPTEC-149082...item45f5169166

These are all from the same seller, of course I don't promise anything, ask him if those 3 are all compatible before buying or do more than the 2 minutes eBay research I did

                Hi Per Hansson, MXM,

                Thanks for the welcome.
As commented by Per Hansson #6, using scsi through usb is not advisable from personal experience. At best, it is very buggy and slow. At times, it may not work, depending on OS.

                Cheers,

^ hey, thanks again, yeah after the whole day researching and based upon this threads' comments i am going for the option you mentioned. as we speak i am currently trying to figure out the best way to adquire such devices, as for the specific compatible models.

                  Thank you again.

Where are you located? How soon do you need this stuff? Asus P2B-S
Asus P2B-DS, Asus CUR-DLS, Asus CUV4X-DS are motherboards having SCSI
controller onboard. I have some of these boards, working, PM me for details. These all support IDE and SCSI, and for that matter have USB out.

I suspect you will want to copy the contents onto a USB external harddrive.

Follow-up, I also have SCSI adapters, cables and SCA adapters, all the parts needed to add to your current machine.

Note: newer IBM (like M50) do not uspport SCSI in the Bios. Almost anything else does though.

If you are using Linux, this is plug and play. Probably easier to put Ubuntu or Linux Mint Live CD in your CD/DVD Drive and copy the files to an external (USB) hardrive.

PM me and I'll let you know how soon I can get this stuff to you.
You could also look at computer recyclers in your area, they will have everything except the SCA adapter

                            that's a very nice drive,
                            questions:

do you know the o.s. / format used ?
do you know if they where raid / jbod / some other strange multi-drive setup ?

just because you can connect the drive doesnt mean you can get the data.

hey, yeah i hope this works

                              the os is W2k Server
and yes they were in an array (3 disks, raid5)

and i hope i get to extract that data, the stuff is on its way

i have thought on some issues on this as wel... thanks for pointing that out. i might try to re-set the raid, if the card im expecting doesnt suport raid i guess i might just have to get me another card... 3 disks they sent me -along with the issue-, as i was told they suffered no damage (we'll see).

                              what would you recommend me??

                              Thanks in advance,

I could have sent you a couple free pci scsi cards. I habe like 3 and where i work we have a whole bin full. But what i was gonna say: in my experience yo dont need drivers for scsi pci cards as long as they have a standard chipset (adaptec for example)

According to the Google search I just did for power edge 2850:

This is the model with DDR2 memory. Is this your model?

The SCSI controller is onboard on this one

This may not be your model, but please advise if you have an Adaptec chip on the board
