    word was driving me nuts

there has been this nutty thing where its making the whole document like expand to fit the pages.

    found the setting

it is PAGE LAYOUT / PAGE SETUP
vertical alignment (change from justify to top)

    any other tips?

Well I don't have a solution (I try to stay away from Word as much as possible), but I do have a similar rant...

So I'm in the lab (at school), typing up a lab report or something, and after every hard return Word decides to put in an extra line break. Not a real one though, because you can't delete it, just a blank line to separate the paragraphs. It took me the better part of the afternoon to figure out how to shut that "feature" off. It's not in options, or preferences or anything. I don't even remember where it is. It would have taken less time to download open office, bypass the school's security measures so I could install it, install it, and start from scratch. Oh well...

etnietering; You can press shift+enter to do a "normal" carriage return in that case

Willa; Thanks a bunch, had that happen at work the other week, truly annoying!
        Know what's more annoying?
People that think Excel is used for writing stuff, so you get a text document with nicle layous and everything but done in excel, like WTF, it's for calculating stuff, not writing a novel lol

There's a button on the ribbon with a symbol of 4 lines and up & down arrows.
          See attachment.

          Or, do this:

thanks per. glad to have helped.

to explain for the rest, the default setting does exactly what it says, it justifies the page vertically. so it will start adding line spacing to expand the text to fill the pages in print layout. previously i was fixing it by adding hard returns after the text on the last page. ie if you complete fully the last page it is not justifying vertically.

except yesterday when it was fucking my document i spent all week writing.

why anyone would need that i dunno

excel 2007 is quite good i like some of the new features. word i am indifferent. before i found that solution i was going to downgrade severely.

You can get rid of the "extra space" by going into Format Paragraph, and setting the space before and after the paragraph to 0pt.

For a permanent fix, you'll have to modify the "Normal" style. Depending on how your school has user profiles set up, it may or may not go between computers when you log on and off.

Doing Shift+Enter works as a short term fix, but it really confuses Word's grammar checking sometimes.

Wow! Thanks for all the tips guys! If only I'd asked you a few years ago when I was having that problem...I try to stay out of that lab as much as possible now, and use open office writer in the other lab or at home. No office 2k7 crap will ever touch my computer.

                      Re: word 2007

Thanks for sharing this Willa. Last week I was going to work on a lab report in the school computer lab but eventually gave up (and typed it at home) because Word 2k7 was doing the same thing like yours.
At home, I'm still on 2k3. Loads much faster than OO ever would, and lacks that "polished" 2k7 interface I couldn't care less about.
As for excel 2k7 - it's alright until you make a graph and try to change things on it like labels, axes, etc. Gotta find the right button at the top and click it, then click on another one, then some more shit, and then finally make changes. In 2k3, you just left-click/right-click on the graph item you want to change and change it. Truly a nobrainer.
