    KVM switch - any experiences/recommendations

I recently bought a Compaq 4110 8 Port PS/2 KVM Switch with cables.

I expected a simple mechanical switch that would hook up multiple boxes to a single keyboard mouse and monitor. Sort of like a rotary switch, think car headlight switch where you would select the box you wanted and then power up that box.

Since I have some older machines that may not support USB keyboards and mice, I was keen on the PS/2 hookup.

The actual switch turns out to be quite a sophisticated electronic device. You can power up all eight computers and toggle between them using the switch. You use the keyboard to toggle between the boxes. The manual suggests max resolution of 1024x768.

I have not used anything like this before. Does anyone have any experience of these devices and opinions about them. Any mistakes to avoid? Thanks for the input.

Make sure not to play around with the cables too much while using it. Best case it will just hang, worst case you will fry a ps/2 port. So turn everything of when connecting/disconnecting and youll be fine. That is the only caveat i know compared to an USB KVM.

Then ofc there is the DVI/HDMI problems some have when swapping between computers but as its ps/2 im guessing its VGA only?
