A bag of fakes. Or Not. or what?

okay i'm a bit confused here...
bought those caps on ebay as a bag of 100pcs.
not really clear picture and the auction only said they are panasonics with 470uF 35V new in bag.
(private seller who obviously didn't know much about the stuff he was selling (in general))

i just bought them cause i was buying other stuff from that seller and he had those up as an auction.. less than 10mins left, 1eur start price, no bid.. so why not?

got the bag today along with my other stuff, which was exactly what it's supposed to be. except those darn caps..
those are (according to the label on the bag) Panasonic TA 35V 470uF 12.5 x 20 caps. (EEUTA1V471)

i immediately noticed something odd about them without even looking up the datasheet.
their sleeve is black with white (instead of the usual silver) printing, completely missing the dark red datecode. another obvious sign is that they don't have the panny T-vent, but a simple X one..

the "electrolytic capacitor quick guide" lists panasonic TA (search in pdf for "EEUTA") as "125°C for automotive application" ... body black, marking *silver* ... hmmmmm
there are already 2 things not matching up. the ones i have are marked 105°C and have white printing. not silver.

the datasheet for TA lists them as 125°C too. another oddity is that on page 2, 35V 470uF 12.5 x 20 is listed as a minimum bag quantity of 200.. my bag has 100pcs..

the rubber bungs shown on page 1 also don't match.

oh what the hell.. a whole bag of 100 fake pannys?

    now what?

Re: A bag of fakes. Or Not. or what?

I'm new to all the "series" of caps so I'm probably dead wrong about this, but I remember reading one post that sometimes manufacturers get OEMs to make "custom" caps with different markings, sleeves, etc?

For example, if GE makes a 10 million widgets and they need caps, GE might want their own custom cap from an OEM for cost savings or special engineering purposes?

Maybe you got one of these "custom" caps?

If you received 100, maybe unravel 1 to see if there is another smaller brand cap behind that like

These units are very likely to be fakes.
From what I have seen, Panasonic (previous Matsushita) electrolytic capacitor vents have a “T” (rounded horizontal line on “T”) vent for radial units; snap-in units have a cross-like “T” vent.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

I agree with japlytic. The rubber seal on the bottom also looks wrong. Compare these two pics. The one on the left is one of my Panny FJ caps. The rubber seal on it is what I see on all genuine pannies 10mm and up in diameter, whether they be FJ, FC, FM or whatever. Your cap (right) looks different to it.

Lowest ESR capacitors, preferably liquid electrolytics but polymer also welcome
          by Perry Babin
I'm looking for suggestions for electrolytics that are 10mm diameter and up to 25mm tall, through-hole radial capacitors with 5mm lead spacing. The value needs to be in the range of 330uF to 470uF. I typically use 35v caps due to their lower ESR vs 16v caps. Currently, the Panasonic FC is being used but the FM series is under consideration.

This is for the primary side of a switching power supply in a car audio amplifier.

Is there a way to calculate power dissipation in a capacitor to predict which will operate at a lower temperature? For example, a 470uF may have a...

UN55NU7100F failed edge lit LED bar, poor quality replacement LED bar AND bulging cap on PSU
          by howardc64
Just typical LED bar failure repair but discovered a couple of things worthy of posting

PSU had a bulging cap (470uF 25V). Likely AC/DC bridge rectifier filter. Have seen a ton of 470uF bridge rectifier filter failures on a bunch of difference devices (not just TVs) Stock up on 470uF 25v 35v

2nd thing worth of note is after all the work to replace edge lit LEDs. Discovered 2 LEDs with phosphor coating differnce produing slightly differnet color temp. Result on edge lit TV = dark veritical band Can't detect when testing the LED bar along...

Funai 32FL553P/10 - squealing from PSU, dies after 10 seconds, blank screen after logo, bootloops
          by kotel studios
          Hi,

Found an Funai 32FL553P/10 TV on sale for cheap listed as broken, so I decided to give a shot at reparing this.

          State I got it in:
          Squealing from the PSU
After logo I get a blank screen
After 10 seconds of having a blank display w/ backlight the TV dies
Give it 7-10ish seconds again and it starts to bootloop.

          What I did so far:
Replaced all the caps on the PSU (apart from primaries, they were fine and none at hand)
          Checked all voltage rails:
          5VSB - 4.8V
          AMP+13V - 14.4V
          13V - 12.98V (in manual 12V)...

How Can I test PWM DM0365R?
          by chth96
          Hello
I have power adaptor(220V/input, 12V 1.2A/output) which has symptom of fluctuating output DC voltage between 11.5V-12.2V.
So I opened its plastic case and when switched it on, I heard constant tik tik sound from inside its PCB.
I measured DC voltage between negative and positive pin of the largest capacitor(400v 10uf) and it was measured contant 300V.
I also measured ESR value of all capacitors and I noticed that one of capacitor(KMG 16v 470uf), which located in the secondary side, have high ESR value(10 ohm),So I replaced it with same specification NXH capacitor....
