Re: Need help! Identify an AC capacitor

2 months later I wanted to share the final results - after speaking with our local Brother's lab technician I followed the technician's advice and removed the cap entirely. He says the cap is an old noise suppression part that is no longer needed.

This solved the problem and the machine works perfectly.

I know that from a safety point of view it might have been better to put on a Y capacitor, but I prefer to replace the entire foot pedal for 20$-30$ if any problem re-occurs.

    thanks everyone for the help

      I disagree.
i.e.- Magically the unit no longer generates line noise...?

This looks to be a carbon-disc type of speed control. As pressure is applied, the little discs are squeezed together more tightly and the resistance goes down. Interference can be generated from:
      1) the on-off switch portion
      2) the discs because they move a bit and can arc
      3) the controlled units motor (it should have its' own suppressor cap, but...)

Also, the cap reduces burning/arc of the on-off switch contacts. Because the load is inductive (motor), when those contacts open, there is an EMF feedback pulse. That cap will help to quench the arc that can/will be generated.

I said that back in Post 2...

Yeah, I liked the way you put it..

It is a carbon-disc speed-control. But I don't really care for line noise (unless it can be hazardous) because now we only use the machine once every 2 months or so..

I just got a gift from my aunt - another Brother machine . It's almost identical in model and age but the condition is much better, so I'm moving to the new machine and if anything funny happens - then its a whole new ride with you guys
