Mouser - 16V Caps

Hi y'All,

I have been trying again to find some caps here in Oz at a reasonable price.

This time, I need 16 volt values - particularly 2200 & 470uF to repair a promising board.

I find myself again considering placing another order to the US - this time to Mouser because of the prohobitively expensive prices here in Oz.

I am waiting confirmation on freight before finalising the order.

I am considering either the UPW or UHE series Nichicons.

Anyone care to offer any criticisms on these before I blow my money?

I worry a little about comments questioning the reliability of this once trusted brand.

all of the insta-explode nichicons appeared to be HN and HM... I use PW, PM, and PL series without any failures yet. I don't know the relation of HE to HN, but the H is worrying.

theres gotta be a good supplier in OZ. you really need to post also on local boards for electronics/diy/hifi etc. someone will know a contact.

I think I have pretty much exhausted all possible suppliers here in OZ.

For the 2200uF x 16V, the best and possibly the only candidate was RS @ A$2.15 vs as low as A$0.94 from Mouser - two for the price of one - I'll take that deal.

Based on my last order to Computek, I guess I am happy enough to order from the US since the freight time and cost is actually not that much different surprisingly enough!

"Insta-explode" caps huh - I will definitely avoid the HN and HM series thankyou.

I did notice that the UHE series was considerably cheaper than the UPW - may be a message here?

Expert Opinion needed: Nichicon PW "Lead Free" Version

For you tech experts:

Nichicon PW series appears on Mouser Catalogue pages 489 & 494

The page 489 caps are a "lead-free" version of the PW series and half the price!

Now maybe I am looking a gift horse in the mouth here, but is the cheaper "Lead-Free" version OK
or is it somehow inferior to the regular one?

i think you are referring to the Geocap range which means that Nichicon has made the caps with lead free terminals and the sleeve contains no PVC. There does not seem to be any other change. This is just for environmental compliance.

previously the terminals were tin-lead plated and now they are tin plated. the sleeve uses polyethylene terephthalate instead of PVC. Basically PVC makes high levels of dioxin in the ash when incinerated because of the chlorine content.

I was wondering if the caps also were designed for the increased heat of lead free soldering but there does not seem to be a change in the geocaps for that purpose.

PW lead-free series, assorted values - 56 caps in total.

That should see me stocked up with a full range for a while.

Hey! Don't suppose they were the PW "lead-free" series?

Just checked on a mobo I got which has a row of Nichicons on it - HM series - Doh!

Just when you thought it was safe to put the cap-box away!
