I don't have any bad (failed) caps, mainly due to these already being fried in the fire bin (a retired ATX case with the top removed and the sides screwed back on). Note to self, collect more flat batteries!

I do have a large collection of working caps though, although they are not necessarily good brands - if they are in spec, I keep them; if not, they go in the fire bin.

Batteries also make a big bang

Same here. 9 times out of 10, the customer doesn't want failed components back.

But garentee once in a while some awkward person would want them back when you have just thrown them way

i had some asshole send the police to a place i worked with once.

guy had brung a tv in dead, the fuse was blown and psu bad.
he refused the repair quote and took it away.

now someone had left the blown fuse out,
he took it someplace else - or opened it, and noticed the fuse missing and called the police!!!

when the police came to the repair shop they looked soo sheepish over it!
we being helpfull people gave them a few new fuses and told them to get lost!!


hopefully the bastard who called the police put a new fuse in and plugged it in again!!!
there is a reason we leave them out, it's to avoid liability.

we just gave the police half a dozen new 20mm fuses because the blown one was gone and told them to get lost - never saw them or the customer (if you can call him that) again!

if they had pushed the point, i suppose we could have blown a new fuse for them!

Thats mental I bet the police found it very foolish as well but had to follow orders, probably would have blown as soon as he installed it hope it did.

Also weird question but how come the second box the majority of the caps are them 47uf 400v capxons that look like the caps that from them set top box power supplies that you posted in "the hall of shame" are they from them set top boxes ?

It looks like that first box contains mostly Samxon KM caps. Is there something wrong with that series?

I have kept all the caps I have replaced that weren't leaking.

I have replaced more Samxon KM's than I can count...
They often go bad without visible signs. Probably around 95% of Samxon KM's I have replaced have not been showing any visible signs of failure, but measured way off.

Samxon GS is another series that is bad, I can't remember seeing a single good GS-series cap, they have always measured very high ESR or open.
And they never show any visible signs.
Now, GS series should never even be used on a power supply, as it is a 85C general purpose series, but they are still very common. Especially on set-top box power supplies.
But KM series is actually listed for power supply use on the datasheet, yet they still are very common to see bad, so that is certainly an bad series...
