What brand are these new polymers?

    http://forum.coolaler.com/showthread.php?t=160049

Recently, Gigabyte has been advertising DS with solid caps. However, these new solid caps doesn't seem to belong to any of the Japanese brands.

    Are they indeed solid caps?

they are not any known good brand anyway. I am thinking from the markings they are FB series but a google said nothing.

It is Korean brand "SAMWHA" polymer FB series.

It is the latest radial type polymer series of "SAMWHA", there is no datasheet to the public now. However, I am sure this matter, trust me.

              Thanks.

Seems a step backward. They use to use Fujitsu and Sanyo.

Well, as fast as alternatives exist, the bean counters are going to work.
We will see, if this would be the next disaster, as we know, that any moisture trapped inside a solid polymer cap will degrade it rather fast.
Put in the usual bad quality and carelessness regarding resources and handling, we have seen with the past ultra low ESR caps, i would not expect a positive outcome.

funny how board makers are marketing polymers as some kind of invincible science-defying cap that never dies

"high quality solid capacitors!" omg they're solid caps of purportedly high-quality just because they're solid, and have none of those pesky issues of electrolytics like a "lifespan" or anything, omgomgomg

Re: What brand are these new polymers?

Samwha, formerly Samsung, has the resources to make good caps. IMO, the primary problem will be how engineers (and beancounter limitations) use them. There is no magic bullet, a great cap can be popped if not used properly.

IMO, one of the problems with the current generations of solid caps is they seem only to be trying to compete with 'lytics, but do so with a smaller sized caps. Imagine if they decided to go beyond that, use a larger size with lower ESR and higher uF instead. It would cost a lot more, but considering the lofty prices of some of today's motherboards, it seems reasonable to me they should never ever have any possible usage scenario where the caps fail prematurely if you're paying that much.

As far as advertising solid caps though, it's not so impressive since even the lower-end brands like Biostar have done that in past years on the VRM subcircuits (where it would matter most) with their TForce series. IMO, for our purposes it could be more convenient if when they use the SMD caps, they at least continue to provide through holes on the PCB if/when a cap would ever need replaced. It's not that we can't get SMD caps, but it is far more convenient to not have to keep stock of so many different caps.

It's weird that the data sheet shows the series name printed on the cap is only a capital "F" while the series name on Gigabyte motherboard is "FB".

The photo of caps will different from the real product in market without any notice by factory, it doesn't matter. Please refer their web site for more details and photos, then you should understand why i sure those are SAMWHA polymers.

Also i have checked some web sites in China(of course language in Chinese only), there are suppliers to make advertising there that "We are dearler of Samwha, and selling Samwha polymer FB caps....." So, i am 100% sure this matter.

So does using these caps mean that Gigabyte's all solid cap boards should be avoided?

lots of mobo manufacturers are going this way. I am reasonably confident that the smaller brands have a better success with their polymers than with their wet electrolytics. Still if the polymers fail without visible sign it is likely for many fails to go unreported.

Thanks! I was just wondering because I ordered a gigabyte p31 board friday with all solid caps hoping for better reliability. If it is a bad board I can send it back when it gets delivered next week.

                                  Hello,
has anyone use these Brands of solder balls? The brand BEST writes on the label of the jar the specs of the solder balls instead of the Mechanic brand. I beleive that BEST brand must be more professional (in labeling at least) but I have never try one of them so I would like your opinion. By the way I hardly can I find the Mechanic brand in aliexpress (the only where I found was lead free solder balls) and on ebay these that I found are approximately15USD per jar. If you know any other trusted brand of solder balls please tell me.
