    Capacitor voltage leak??

While in circuit and powered on should a capacitor ever have voltage to the metal can that contains it??

I have 2 220uf 25v caps on an X main board that have 60v when probe is touched to the X vent. None of the others of that voltage and uf have any volts to can.

Are they bad?? Neither one is bulging. Thanks.

    Re: Capacitor voltage leak??

The voltage written on the case of a capacitor is the maximum voltage the capacitor can tolerate before it becomes damaged.

The metal case of the capacitor can sometimes be isolated from the capacitor, but it's often "connected" to the negative lead (not on purpose, just a consequence of how a capacitor is built).

Therefore, it's best to measure the voltage between the two leads of the capacitor, not between one lead and its case, or one lead and the metal chassis.

I suspect you measured 60v incorrectly, because of different grounds (maybe you put the probe on chassis or the monitor).

You can't really tell that a capacitor is bad or not by measuring voltage. Even measuring capacitance is not a good way to check a capacitor - it's quite possible to measure the capacitance with a multimeter and see the expected value but the capacitor can still be bad when you actually power up the circuit.

Proper measurements can be done using LCR meters or ESR meters with the capacitor removed from circuit.

      Re: Capacitor voltage leak??

I did have ground probe on chassis, readings of 60v to can are not incorrect, these are on an X main plasma board which is grounded to chassis.

3 others of same V and uf have no volts to can. Nor do any of the other cap's on this board (2 100v 220uf and 5 250v 150uf) caps.

That's why I was curious about reading.

Board is supposed to be outputting 58v DC and -198v DC its input voltage is 211v DC.

I have an 21 inch CRT TV which is not able to power on.
I disassembled 21 inch CRT TV and measured voltage of main filter capacitor(Samhwa HC 400WV 220uF) in the circuit.
It shows 270V on my DMM.

So I discharged this main filter capactior completely and detached circuit board from cathode-ray tube.
Then I desoldered this main filter capacitor from circuit board.
But I noticed that this desoldered large capacitor(Samhwa HC 400WV 220uF) is slowly charged by itself until it reached 0.6V

I measured its ESR value with MESR-100 and it shows 0.1 ohm,judging...

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

        Assuming...

        RTX 3080 FE Identifying capacitor

Hi people, I hope this is the correct spot to post this, I'm new to the forum.

I have an RTX 3080 Founders Edition which has a burnt up capacitor (it was in parallel with another capacitor which appears damaged too), so I am hoping to be able to identify the capacitor values and order replacements.

I hope these photos make it clear which component I am referring to:
(yes, the soldering is a bit botched from removing the blown one, I know)

I have found the board schematic (attached), but there does not seem to be a boardview available. I have never...

Lenovo L490 Ram voltage circuit malfunction

        Hello friends,

Looking for some guidance here. The RAM voltage circuit on this motherboard keeps burning out PU301 which is a RT8231AGQW. Copy of the board with the burnt chip attached with some voltage measurements and copy of the schematics also included.

I think I've checked almost every component in the circuit, but when I change the RT8231, the laptop starts I have 1.2V on the inductor for about 10 seconds and then the RT8231 goes south and no more voltage on the inductor. All other voltages on the laptop are good, this is the only one conking out for a reason I...
