    Re: Soldering question

The problem is actually with the thermometer. It is stuck at 500*C and it stops the iron from heating. My solution was just to short the thermocouple with some wire, so that the gauge says 0 and the heater stays on constantly. It probably runs at more like 600*C now, but I haven't had too many problems with burning traces or anything.

I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

      Re: Soldering question

you should check that, it's usually a thermocouple that generates a voltage rising with temperature.
very reliable, but sometimes the cable between the iron & base breaks.

      what make/model is it?

        Re: Soldering question

I got my pump in today. I put some new solder on the hole with the leg stuck then used the pump, did it on both sides and the leg came out. I did it with the 25w one I have now the hakko one wont be in until tomorrow. What is the way to get ic chips off?

            Re: Soldering question

Jeff, To get ic's off I use my Desoldering Station's hot air gun, turn up temp to what's needed and turn up the pressure also same way. I would of already had the correct nozzle on it, then it will melt both sides of solder, then lift ice out with ESD safe tweezers.

Oopps, sorry Jeff answered for myself. Use your new Hakko and some braided desoldering wire, heat & pull braid over legs.

Guide to transplant MEC1503 EC chip and EEPROM reprogamming for T14s gen 2 and X13 gen 2
                by acedogblast
This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). This forum has been extremely helpful to me so I would like to contribute to help others. I will tell you right now that this task is very difficult to do. You MUST have experience and tools to do precision micro-soldering, BGA reballing, trace repair, and general laptop repair skills.

There are some specialty tools needed to do this task. The replacement MEC1503 chips can be acquired from Aliexpress. Do not buy the bare chips as...

                Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

Friend messed up my laptop motherboard while working on my bench
                by Geeker007
                Hi All,

So my friend was visiting and he wanted to use my solder bench to solder on some WLED circuit board. My laptop was open on the side for RAM upgrade. I know my mistake.

So while soldering he had too much solder on the soldering iron tip and he just shook off the soldering iron on the table itself to remove extra solder on the soldering tip and it landed on the motherboard of laptop. He then out of fear tried to remove it using solder wick and did more damage by removing some components as well. So here I am with weird situation.

                I have not tried putting...

BGA solder balls not connecting - help pls
                by petemanuk
So I though in my spare time I’d set myself up repairing motherboards mainly pin damaged lga1151 sockets types.

I’m using an achi ir sc pro rework station (gave up on my Achie ir6500 - don’t recommend)

I’ve managed to get my rework profile somewhere in the correct region (after a lot of trial and error) to get the old sockets off and reflow new ones back on again, the problems I’m getting is not all of the solder balls are re-attaching when re-flow occurs. I know this because when socket is removed pads still look clean and have no solder...
