    Sizing substitutes. What's the percentage?

My Bell ExpressVu receiver is acting up and I found 4 bulged 1200uf 6.3v caps and 2 bulged 820uf 6.3v caps. I have the 820uf caps but they are 35v. I know that is not a problem but can I use a 1000uf 25v cap instead of the 1200uf cap?

EDIT: The old caps were Teapo's. The 1000uf ones I want to install are Nippon Chemicon.

It is most likely that you would have problems fitting in a higher voltage unit in the place of the lower voltage unit.
I recommend replacing all of the non-Japanese electrolytic capacitors, as some cable and satellite receivers get rather hot inside and literally bake the power supply.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

Most electrolytic capacitors are rated plus or minus 20% going from 6.3 volts to 35v is a bit much, but they will work, I would use 6.3 or 10v to keep the size down.

The Nippon 1000uf I used were 10v. They fit perfectly. The 820uf ones I had were 25v but taller and the same thickness. I only had one Nichicon 820uf but I had three Sam Young ones. Will they do or should I look at changing those in the future? The receiver is working great so far. The bulged caps I pulled out varied from 400uf to 800uf when I metered them. Where I installed the caps, there was lots of room. It wasn't cramped at all, so the larger caps fit good.

A 20% 1200uF capacitor could be as low as 960uF and still be within spec. If your 1000uF replacements don't measure any less than that, then I don't see there is likely to be a problem.

I metered the Nippon's before installing them and they read over 1000uf. So I'm sure they'll be fine. I'm more worried about these Sam Young caps.

They'll work for now but I say replace them with something better when you can.

Thank you so much. I'll order the proper caps from simoncapacitor on ebay just to be safe. Even though the unit is working great right now.
