Hi, I was just curious if the brand of solid capacitors mattered as much as it did for electrolytic capacitors and if solid caps last a long time in general if they're used in things like motherboards and graphics cards.
Average lifespan of a polymer capacitor?

Re: Average lifespan of a polymer capacitor?
Depends which...
There are different kinds of polymers... If your thinking about Ultra-Low ESR polymers, there are two varieties, both of which should last well over several thousand hours, one more significantly longer than the other. -
Re: Average lifespan of a polymer capacitor?
That's not very comforting. There's 8765 hours in a year so it sounds like if you leave it running, you should expect it to fail in about six months. I'd really expect 50,000 hour minimum for a consumer product. Maybe even 100,000 hours.should last well over several thousand hoursComment

Re: Average lifespan of a polymer capacitor?
remember that the rating is at max rated ripple and temp.
and they dont just die at the end they just go out of spec.
only way a pc runs at 105c is if its on fire.or the room its in is.
and something else will give up before the polys.Comment

Re: Average lifespan of a polymer capacitor?
the brand of any cap always matters!I was just curious if the brand of solid capacitors mattered
In solid caps, stick with Rubycon, Panasonic, Nippon Chemi-Con, Fujitsu, and Nichicon__________________

Re: Average lifespan of a polymer capacitor?
Actually, I hear it doesn't even mean that much... I heard that it means "after this many hours, it will still be in spec". It doesn't mean it'll go out of spec right then. It could last twice that, or even more...Comment

Re: Average lifespan of a polymer capacitor?
The (reliable and proven specs) for a cap matter more than anything. Just going with a brand can leave you paying more and getting less if you don't know what you are buying. Solid Polymers tend to last longer than electrolytic due to design and being the next generation per say.
Any cap misused or abused will fail, but for a general standard (used correctly in the circuit) Polys will last longer than Electrolytic only because they are designed to do so.Last edited by brethin; 09-30-2013, 08:06 PM.Comment

Re: Average lifespan of a polymer capacitor?
Sorry pardner, but that's as silly as saying what brand of car you buy has no effect on reliability!
but in reality, the brand of car and capacitor you buy has everything to do with reliability and durability!
There are Lexus's, Hondas, Subarus, Acuras, Toyotas and Infinitis at one extreme if you like to never see your mechanic, and Dodge, Ford, Land Rover, Jaguar and Chrysler's for you folks who like to have your car fixed on a regular basis.
In the capacitor world, pretty much the same story, just a different set of Japanese names at the top! - and as far "paying more"? - I don't think that 10 cents for the finest low-ESR 10uF 50V cap made is gonna break me, ya see, I've got that kinda cash!

Re: Average lifespan of a polymer capacitor?
i think this is half on topic lol, how long will a motherboard with Taiwanese polys probably last me?Sorry pardner, but that's as silly as saying what brand of car you buy has no effect on reliability!

Re: Average lifespan of a polymer capacitor?
if the polys are from a top Taiwan, Japan or Korea cap company, they will last long enough that you will no longer care about the old board by the time they go bad.

Re: Average lifespan of a polymer capacitor?
I only use Japanese and Korean capacitors.
favorite Korean brand is Samyoung
some other great Japanese electrolytic brands not mentioned in my previous posts are Toshin Kogyo, ELNA, and HitachiLast edited by theOracle; 10-03-2013, 02:18 AM.__________________

Capacitor detached from PCB – RTX 2070 Super Founders Edition
Description:
During maintenance on an RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition, I found a capacitor lying on my desk after reassembly.
I did not notice it detaching, so I am unsure of its original location on the PCB.
Procedure performed:
- Removed backplate
- Cleaned heatsink and PCB with isopropyl alcohol + soft ESD brush
- Reapplied thermal compound
- Reassembled card
Observed behavior after reassembly:
- GPU powers on and operates normally under...11 Photos -
by chth96a few days ago I finally purchased mser-100 v2 and I tested its abillity of measuring ESR value.
I found that It shows pretty accurate ESR value for electrolytic capacitor,But When I measure polymer capacitor of dreamcast game console,I found that one third of polymer capacitor's ESR value is more than twice the value of ESR meter table.(for example, I measured one polymer capacitor of 6.3v 100uf, It showed ESR value of 7.68)
Although my dreamcast now turns 20 years old but it still works. I occasionally have played game with it.
Is this ESR value of polymer capacitor correct?...-

by eccerr0rAnyone had a solid polymer capacitor fail for whatever reason?
How do they fail? Do they explode, go open, short out, ?
How about for different reasons: forcing excessive ripple current, overheating, voltage too high, reverse voltage?
Just wondering about the causes for a potential shorted solid polymer capacitor... trying to debug a board that has a ~4Ω "short" on a track... it may or may not be a capacitor but was wondering what if it were...-

by PrologHi people, I hope this is the correct spot to post this, I'm new to the forum.
I have an RTX 3080 Founders Edition which has a burnt up capacitor (it was in parallel with another capacitor which appears damaged too), so I am hoping to be able to identify the capacitor values and order replacements.
I hope these photos make it clear which component I am referring to:
(yes, the soldering is a bit botched from removing the blown one, I know)
I have found the board schematic (attached), but there does not seem to be a boardview available. I have never... -
by Agent24I have acquired a used Dick Smith Q-1760 power supply - although the OEM is Manson Industrial
It has at least one problem.
The voltage control potentiometer VR2, 50K is faulty - going high resistance / open circuit in the CCW end and leading to the output voltage jumping around.
I have already ordered a replacement potentiometer, so that's not an issue.
Now, I want to replace all three electrolytics on the PCB as they are CapXon and I don't trust them so much, I will replace them with something better while I've got the thing apart anyway.
All are CapXon... - Loading...
