    G4 iBook, bad/cracked capacitor?

OMG it's a noob. I asked around at Anandtech's forums if what in the picture below is a bad capacitor and what remedies there are for it. Got some good answers and was also referred here. Figured I'd ask again considering the expertise of this forum.

    Here's the photo:
    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/attach...tid=3889&stc=1

The diameter of the hex nut thread is 2mm so the C91/92 caps are probably slightly under 1mm in size. My questions are, 1) How difficult would removing and replacing the cracked cap be & 2) What side effects would there be from removing the cracked one and bridging the connectors with solder? I'm pretty sure having no cap there and having a direct connection would be extremely bad for the motherboard, but what could happen from it? There's no markings I can see on any of them so I'm sure finding a replacement would be damned hard, anyone possibly know what ratings they could be?

Finding a cap like that is remarkabley simple.
Open up almost any electronic device, anything, if its broken even better.
You will find a cap just like that, probably 20 of them.
Yhe value is realy almost inconsequential, as long as looks just like the broken one.
You would never want to short a cap, never.
When you open up an old phone, stereo, whatever and see those size caps you will be faced with very small desoldering and resoldering.
You should also know that the component shown broken is not a critical one, but if you have steady hands, replace it.

It is probably a decoupling cap, wich shorts the noise to ground. If you short that cap, you would have a nice and havy short wich would burn some component beyond your repair ability. Caps are usually isolators for DC, thus one side is ground the other could be any voltage present in the circuit. As SMD ceramic capazitors are usually not marked, it is impossible to find the exact value. But ususally this is not that critcall on that particular purpose.

i do agree with gonzo0815: the cap most probably for decoupling, so you'd better leave it as it is. if you really want to replace it you could go for almost any capacitance..if it's 0805 try to get 1nF.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Out of curosity I tested whether there was still conductivity through it with my multimeter last night and there is. Took me by surprise actually. Also when I touched one of the leads to the heatsink hex nut and the other to either side of the cap it showed conductivity. I'm thinking I should just leave it alone and not try to replace it.

If I replace with inferior capacitor, Is it No harm to other IC components at all?
            by chth96
I replaced some capacitor which is located on optical pickup pcb which is shown in the table below(PCB #2).Because it have been out of order.
Now,It works very well,But I just have found that all caps (6svpc100my and other part number as well) ,which is shown in the table below, has ultra-high ripple current spec.
It is not able to obtain any capacitor which can be a substitute for this ultra-high ripple current nichicon capacitor.
So I replaced it with samxon and rubycon's general capacitor(GP,YXA series).
I know that these capacitor will not last as long as nichicon capacitor...

How can I test non-polarized capacitor?
            by chth96
I desoldered samwha NF capacitor(50v 5.6uf) from PCB circuit of 29inch CRT TV which have symptoms of no display after I heard sound of inrush of current to TV whenever I switch on this television.
I measured ESR value of this non-polarized capacitor(samwha NF capacitor 50v 5.6uf) by means of MESR-100 ESR meter and It displayed 0.3 ohm

And When I measured its capacitance with digital multimeter and LCR-T4 Mega328 meter, It displayed 10uf from DMM and 8uf from LCR-T4 meter.
I found catalogue of samwha capacitor(samwha-catalogue_3.pdf file), which is attached to this thread,...

Is it no harm to replace with capacitor without ripple current rating?
            by chth96
When I tried to repair LG 29 inch CRT TV, I found that the ESR value of samyoung SMS capacitor(160v 2.2uf), which is very close to D1879 transistor, is 6 ohm.

Judging from above ESR Meter Table,I think It is necessary to replace this sms capacitor. So I visited local electronics shop, and I purchased 160v 2.2uf rubycon YK capacitor.
But when I browse through rubycon YK datasheet,I found that there is no ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf specification. But On the contrary, I found 39 mA ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf SMS capacitor.
            Rubycon YK DataSheet (b...

            Should I replace polymer capacitor?
            by chth96
a few days ago I finally purchased mser-100 v2 and I tested its abillity of measuring ESR value.
I found that It shows pretty accurate ESR value for electrolytic capacitor,But When I measure polymer capacitor of dreamcast game console,I found that one third of polymer capacitor's ESR value is more than twice the value of ESR meter table.(for example, I measured one polymer capacitor of 6.3v 100uf, It showed ESR value of 7.68)
Although my dreamcast now turns 20 years old but it still works. I occasionally have played game with it.
Is this ESR value of polymer capacitor correct?...

            Hi everyone,

I'm new to this, so I apologize for not providing enough details. Is there anything else I need to mention? I'm trying to learn more about electronic/board repairs and hopefully fix my own.

The only visible issue on my board is one capacitor, CP813, which appears to be labeled R 221k 2kV (possibly obsolete to B 221k 2kV now). My monitor hadn't shown any prior issues, although it is a few years old. Just before the capacitor popped, there was a high-pitched squeal for 2–3 seconds.

I don't see any other visible damage anywhere else on the board....
